Sterling Audio SL230MP Pair

Everyone needs a pair of small diaphragm condensers. Sterling audio have released an affordable matched pair that won’t flatten your wallet. Both mics comes with a carrying case, complete with shockmounts and windscreens.

Sterling Audio, makers of high-quality studio recording equipment, announces the SL230MP medium-diaphragm condenser microphones. Offered as a matched pair, the SL230MP mics are an excellent choice for capturing ultra-realistic stereo recordings of acoustic guitar, piano, percussion, choirs, string sections, entire bands or orchestras, and more. As expected from Sterling, the sound and build quality is comparable to that of microphones many times more expensive.

Each SL230 mic employs a real gold-sputtered condenser capsule with a six-micron membrane, allowing for very high sensitivity to even the subtlest dynamic nuances in the source material. The mics’ cardioid pickup pattern provides excellent rejection of off-axis sounds, and a Class-A FET (field effect transistor) circuit design fosters smooth, wide frequency response and clean, consistent performance. As with most condenser mics, Sterling Audio SL230s operate on standard 48 volt phantom power.

A switchable highpass filter at 75 Hz rolls off rumble and subsonic vibrations. Thanks to a selectable -15 dB pad, the SL230 can be used in in high-volume applications where many condenser microphones fear to tread. With the pad engaged, the SL230 handles sound pressure levels up to 150 dB, making the pair a good option for applications such as drum overheads in a live setting.

Sterling Audio takes the utmost care in the matching process, ensuring that the two mics exhibit frequency response and output characteristics within a single dB of one another for consistent level matching in stereo applications. The two SL230s come with a rugged, padded protective case, two SM9 shock mounts, and two windscreens.

The Sterling Audio SL230MP cardioid condenser microphone pair is available March 1, 2019, at Guitar Center retail stores and online at Musician’s Friend (musiciansfriend.com) for just $149.99. Kemper Profiler OS 5.7

This is a big one! Big as in space (Reverb). Kemper have announced version 5.7 of the acclaimed Profiler OS with five new reverb modules.

Kemper GmbH, the makers of the acclaimed Kemper PROFILER announced today the immediate availability of PROFILER OS 5.7. This new version introduces five new, studio quality, „big machine“-type reverb algorithms: Spring Reverb, Natural Reverb, Easy Reverb, Echo Reverb, and Cirrus Reverb. It also brings some new routing possibilities and a lot of system enhancements.

The Spring Reverb is inspired by the most sought-after spring reverb for guitarists: the Reverb Tank from 1963. Two prominent characteristics define this legendary reverb sound: one is the lack of low frequencies, due to a steep low cut filter used in the original design. The other is the haunting sound that resembles water dripping in a cave. To faithfully recreate this effect, Kemper have provided a dedicated intensity parameter called “Dripstone”.

The Natural Reverb is based on the latest digital reverb science and technology. Natural Reverb is capable of creating all kinds of natural sounding rooms — from ambiances too short to be noticed, to lush and epic spaces. This also includes plate reverb simulations, and even artificial and synthesizer-like reverb pads — all achievable with just the turn of two or three knobs.

The Echo Reverb is a delay combined with a reverb. In other words: a Natural Reverb with a feedback control added to its pre-delay to create rhythmic repetitions of the reverb tail. So, instead of using a straight delay type for a rhythmic enhancement, use the Echo Reverb for diffuse and soft echo reflections, when you find a regular delay is sounding too concrete or direct for your needs.

The Cirrus Reverb starts where the Natural Reverb ends. Its specialty is long, ethereal reverb tails with exceptionally slow reverb onsets. For that reason, the Cirrus Reverb does not feature a pre-delay. The modulation pattern is also different from the Natural Reverb: it does not build up by time but stays consistent instead.

Effects slots/ placement – Now since OS 5.7 all the FX of the Profiler incl. Delay and Reverb can now be positioned freely into any FX slot before or after the Amplifier section. This means that the guitar player could place 6 Delays and 2 reverbs around the Amplifier … which might make no sense, but it is possible. To put Delays and Reverbs into their designated slots makes still sense though as these slots have special routing features which can be defined in the global rig parameters.

And then some …
The Space
effect is identical to the global version of Space in the Output Section. It produces the natural reflections of a small, neutral-sounding room. The most obvious result of these reflections is that a mono signal is converted to stereo; to soften the transients, a little diffusion is also applied. You can still combine the Space effect with delay or longer reverbs, without creating too much reverberation.

The algorithm is designed to be the shortest possible room effect and therefore has no deep parameters. Use the Intensity parameter to control the strength of the effect.

The Legacy Reverb is based on the first reverb algorithm created for the PROFILER. The main purpose of this reverb type is to maintain full backward compatibility with Rigs that have been created before the advent of PROFILER operating system 5.7.

Slate Digital Introduces Gates

The gate is one of the toughest plugins to master. While some do the job adequately, the controls are tough to use and artifacts abound. Slate has come up with their version that caters to different stages of the audio that needs gating.

The gate is one of the most important weapons in an audio engineer’s arsenal. Used tactically, it can eliminate or reduce unwanted bleed or background noise from recorded source material. Used creatively, its applications are virtually limitless. Previously, Slate users have had to call upon gates from directly within their DAW or third-party plugins of choice. But those days are history…

Introducing two new gate modules: Gate: Classic and Gate: Drums. You can now access nearly infinite gating options without ever having to leave your Virtual Mix Rack workflow!

Gate: Classic is a traditional, straightforward gate that is highly efficient in removing background noise from guitars, vocals, and other acoustically-recorded source material.

Gate: Drums is a highly-sophisticated drum application. It combines a gate based on transient detection with smart dynamic filtering so you can achieve far cleaner drum tracks than with a conventional gate.

Flock Audio Patch

Now, we’re getting somewhere in audio. I haven’t been this excited to see a new take on recording gear since the Slate Raven. This one doesn’t make tracks sound better but is just as important nonetheless. Flock Audio have made an analog passthrough, digitally controlled patchbay. No more TT Cables!

EDMONTON, AB, CANADA: having fulfilled preorders, then turned heads and opened musical minds with a show-stopping showcase at The 2019 NAMM Show in Southern California, January 24-27, pro audio manufacturer Flock Audio is proud to announce availability of its innovative PATCH System — surely the world’s most advanced digitally-controlled, 100%-analog patch bay routing system, thanks to a killer combination of (PATCH APP) software and 64-point connection-providing (PATCH) hardware working together in perfect harmony, allowing anyone to easily control analog audio routings without having to resort to the use of manual patch cables — as of March 25…

Who better to formally introduce the world’s most advanced digitally-controlled, 100%-analog patch bay routing system to the wider world than Flock Audio CEO/Director Darren Nakonechny? He helpfully begins by picking up the backstory, before fast-forwarding through to the resultant revolutionary PATCH System solution: “I started working on a conceptual design known as PATCH in early 2016 when I decided to leave my stable career and chose to pursue the path less travelled of designing and developing a better and more efficient process for professional audio recording engineers from the depths of my basement home recording studio. In need of a better solution other than the available 1870s technology known as a traditional patch bay, the concept was born to create a fully-digitally-controlled — but 100%-analog — circuit routing system that wouldn’t color or alter the audio signals passing through it. After two years of strenuous work and constant focus, Flock Audio, the company I started, created the world’s first and most advanced digitally-controlled analog audio routing system with features never before possible in conventional analog audio routing.”

Revolutionary as it is, the PATCH System design duly makes sense. Simple and sleek as the beautifully-built PATCH hardware may first appear — and well worthy of the PROUDLY DESIGNED & MANUFACTURED IN CANADA wording boldly blazoned across its single rack space-occupying rear panel, packing in a whole lot of user-friendly functionality clearly comes naturally to all at Flock Audio.

Advantageously, the PATCH hardware features four connectors — two INPUTS (on Neutrik XLR/TRS Combo jacks) and two OUTPUTS (on Neutrik XLR male jacks) — perfectly positioned on its front panel, meaning users can conveniently and easily integrate any analog audio equipment or instruments into their recording setup that they might need to audition. As such, they can quickly redirect INPUTS 31-32 and/or OUTPUTS 31-32 from the rear side of the PATCH hardware by clicking the FRONT INPUTS or FRONT OUTPUTS toggle buttons located in the lower section of the equally easy to use, easy on the eye PATCH APP software GUI (Graphical User Interface), instantly receiving notification that those rear side outputs are no longer actively functioning. Front panel-redirected INPUTS 31-32 are able to have 48V phantom power supplied to their connectors using the PATCH APP software, which will be visually confirmed by the front panel-positioned 48V PHANTOM POWER LED (Light Emitting Diode) illuminating as a slow-fading blue indicator to notify the user to not plug or unplug any audio equipment until the 48V phantom power is disabled. Three further coloured LEDs complete the simple- and sleek-looking PATCH hardware’s front panel, also assisting the user with welcomed visual notifications — namely, HOST SIGNAL (illuminates solid blue when the PATCH hardware is connected to — and communicating with — the associated CPU); EXTERNAL 48V WARNING (illuminates as a flashing red indicator when any connected preamp has its 48V phantom power activated as it’s not necessary to activate 48V phantom power on any connected preamp since the PATCH System supplies its own onboard 48V phantom power); plus POWER rocker switch (with an associated blue LED indicator).

Returning rear side, all remains relatively straightforward, starting with a 6-pin POWER SUPPLY connection for the included 24VDC power supply (with threaded locking sleeve). Next to that sits the USB connector; clearly, the PATCH System uses very little CPU (Central Processing Unit) power to send and receive commands from the hardware, so works off USB 2.0 and onwards compatibility — chosen for its inherent low CPU usage. Ultimately, users benefit from the PATCH System’s hardware processing working harder for their audio interface and DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), as opposed to devoting a large amount of that processing to routing analog audio equipment. Each PATCH System, of course, comes complete with a USB-A to USB-B cable. Connectivity is what it’s all about, after all, and the PATCH hardware doesn’t disappoint in that regard, readily equipped to become the hub of any studio setup with 64-point connection via eight DB-25 connectors — INPUTS (1-8), INPUTS (9-16), INPUTS (17-24), INPUTS (25-32), OUTPUTS (1-8), OUTPUTS (9-16), OUTPUTS (17-24), OUTPUTS (25-32) — for those all-important analog routings.

Reality dictates, however, that it’s the killer combination of PATCH APP software and 64-point connection-providing PATCH hardware working together in perfect harmony that makes the PATCH System what it is — the world’s most advanced digitally-controlled, 100%-analog patch bay routing system, allowing anyone to easily control analog audio routings without having to resort to the use of manual patch cables. Cable replacement comes courtesy of the MacOS- and Windows- compatible PATCH APP software. Skilfully accomplished, finely tuned, and intuitively powerful, it brings the simplicity of drag and drop functionality to the world of analog audio routing. PATCH APP is really the driving force behind creating complex or basic analog audio routings in seconds!

Intentionally implementing a familiar look and feel, yet oozing originality, PATCH APP harnesses the PATCH System’s power and flexibility via four user-friendly sections, starting with an index of HARDWARE; here users can customise and store all their DB-25-connected outboard audio equipment and instruments in an easy-to-use, searchable index. The ROUTINGS menu allows them to quickly store active routings and recall them at a later date. Arranged as a grid, the active routings section is where users can set up and visualise their routings. There they can click and drag any analog hardware from the HARDWARE index into a PATH to create their desired signal flow combination; by being based on the visual concept of most DAW layouts, the active routings section should feel familiar to today’s DAW-driven production populace. Put simply, a PATH represents the PATCH System’s signal flow; all are arranged from top to bottom in the PATCH APP. Adding advanced Multing — turning one PATH into two or more for parallel processing — capability is simply a case of clicking the directional arrow so it illuminates in yellow to the right side of any active PATH on the specific ‘digital rack piece’ that the user wishes to Mult from. And all without the impedance issues that come with traditional Multing, meaning that there is no chance of any split signal quality loss!

Last but by no means least, the PATCH System has 32 channels of 48V phantom power built right in so users can activate 48V phantom power to any of its input channels for powering condenser microphones the way they were intended to be powered. It’s possible to toggle the 48V MASTER — ON or OFF — and ALLOW or DENY the ability to connect 48V phantom power on any input connected to the PATCH System using the 48V SAFEGUARD feature via the PATCH APP; as such, it’s safe to say that it’s impossible to accidentally enable and/or damage any phantom-powered prized microphones — much to the relief of any serious studio owner, obviously!

And as if that wasn’t enough to be getting on with, why not route and identify multiple PATCH Systems for expanded I/O capabilities? Why not, indeed. It’s equally easy, after all. Almost anything is possible when working with the world’s most advanced digitally-controlled, 100%-analog patch bay routing system from Flock Audio!

PATCH System is now available for purchase — priced at an RRP of $2,199.00 USD — through Flock Audio’s growing global network of authorised dealers (https://www.flockaudio.com/dealers) or order online directly from Flock Audio (https://www.flockaudio.com/buynow).

Eventide Instant Flanger Mk II

Tape flange, whether subtle or in your face is a necessary trick to have in the toolbox. Eventide releases the Instant Flanger MkII to add to the quiver. This particular model was used in both Bowie and Cyndi Lauper recordings.

The great sound of vintage tape flanging is now available for your plug-in toolbox. Famously used on David Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” and Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” the Instant Flanger is a versatile tool for stereo sweetening, subtle modulations, double tracking, and extreme flanging effects.

In the tape era, the terms “phasing” and “flanging” were used interchangeably. Then, in 1971, we released the Instant Phaser which was based on analog filters rather than delay. The Instant Flanger, released in 1975, used a true time delay circuit using bucket brigade chips, producing a much deeper effect.

Sonarworks Referencer

Crazy enough, we have another software company venturing into hardware. This one doesn’t require elective surgery. Sonarworks Referencer is a guitar pedal that promises a little more than just good tone…

Sonarworks’ First Hardware Device Automatically Increases Social Media Like Counts via Dedicated Footswitch

Riga, Latvia, April 1, 2019 – Innovative European audio software developer Sonarworks unveiled its first hardware device: the Sonarworks Referencer.  The new guitar pedal — which comes in a sturdy metal housing with a big blue light, a switch and four shiny black knobs — leverages an electric guitar’s built-in pickups as microphones, then using advanced AF (augmented feedback) technology, automatically calibrates the guitarist’s amplifier to their current position. It also features digitization technology to help users take their social media status to the next level.

“For many of our customers, the challenge has been accurate monitoring outside of the box, and after much research and deliberation it is clear that there is demand for Sonarworks to produce a hardware solution,” commented Lee Chapman, Chief Innovation Officer, Sonarworks. “It took our team seven months to come up with a prototype as it was vitally important that this wasn’t just as intelligent as Reference 4, but far easier to use too.”

In creating Referencer, Sonarworks took into consideration what it believes is the most important challenge in the studio: the relationship the engineer and the guitarist. With such a full feature set and intuitive calibration technology that features the next level of DSP engineering, Sonarworks has leveled the playing field for guitarists — essentially making personalized tone crafting skills redundant.

“Throughout the R&D process of creating this product, we ran focus groups with our target audience – the so-called guitarists – and found a distinct correlation between having no say in the tonal diversity to having increased confidence,” said Chapman. “Our DSP technology has leveled the playing field so the tone you have meticulously created becomes irrelevant.”

By placing the Sonarworks Referencer at the end of any pedal chain, guitarists can dial in their tone from wherever they are using a combination of four knobs: Gain, Bass Boost, Dry/Wet, Tilt and Calibration. Further, as home studios become more of a focus for Sonarworks customers, the pedal also integrates a switch that makes sure tones are accurately translated from listener to listener — thereby increasing their social media like counts.

About Sonarworks
Sonarworks was founded in 2012 when two music lovers met a scientist and embarked on a mission to deliver the ultimate sound experience for anyone creating or listening to music. The company’s headquarters are based in Riga, Latvia and its customers consist of Grammy Award winning audio and music industry professionals, audiophiles and music lovers around the world.
