Arturia iSEM Expands to New Apple Audio Unit

Arturia is easily King of the vintage recreations in software form. Their presets are track ready and have a reputation for being used in countless hits. Now the iPad version of iSEM has been updated to the new Apple Audio Unit format.

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware developer Arturia is proud to advance its award-winning iSEM — an authentic-sounding software recreation of the trailblazing Seventies-vintage Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module® (SEM) for Apple’s iPad — as one of the first fully-compatible apps for Apple’s all-new Audio Unit Extensions technology, as of November 19.
Apple’s Audio Unit Extensions is an all-new technology in its latest iOS 9 (mobile) and OS X El Capitan (Mac) operating systems that aims to bring the Audio Units (AU) system-level full plug-in architecture model that was previously only available to third-party developers like Arturia in OS X to both OS X and iOS! And Arturia is one of the first third-party developers to enthusiastically embrace its innovative musical advancement with the release of the latest iSEM update. This represents a much more user-friendly experience than the traditional way of interlinking apps using Inter-App Audio or Audiobus, which was the case with previous versions of this award-winning app.
According to iSEM development partner Rolf Wöhrmann, “The main difference is that you can now run iSEM from within an app like GarageBand for iPad in much the same way as you would work with standard Arturia plug-ins when running them in desktop- or laptop-based host applications — integrating the great synth sounds of iSEM into your GarageBand projects without leaving the GarageBand app, in other words. By using Audio Unit Extensions-compatible apps like iSEM, GarageBand users can extend its sonic capabilities above and beyond those of the built-in instruments into the wonderful world of Arturia. Indeed, it appears that we are one of the first — if not the first — to support this. That said, iSEM users can now easily record and multitrack their iSEM-based creations within GarageBand, adding drums, voice, guitar, and other sounds to make more complete musical arrangements, if they so wish. It’s also perfectly possible to have multiple instances of iSEM running in GarageBand — at least three or four when using latest-generation iPads, which was impossible with the previous ‘standalone’ version of iSEM.”
Truly trailblazing technology, then… in much the same way that the original Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module® (SEM) was back in its day. How about a little history? Hatched by legendary synth designer Tom Oberheim back in 1974, the dual-oscillator SEM was originally conceived as a way of beefing up weaker-sounding compatible analogue monosynths of the time. It soon became a sought-after sound in its own right, so its Californian creator came up with a series of successive SEM-based instruments, first pairing up two SEMs with a 37-note keyboard and a simple analogue step sequencer to form the Two Voice, Oberheim’s first self-contained compact, duophonic synthesizer in 1975. Polyphonic programmability came courtesy of Oberheim’s breakthrough Polyphonic Synthesizer Programmer which — when hardwired into the fair-sized Four Voice (featuring four SEMs and a 49-note keyboard) in 1976 and enormous Eight Voice (eight SEMs set across two tiers) in 1977 — enabled the control voltages of many parameters for up to eight SEMs to be memorised for the first time. Though these instruments were undeniably groundbreaking, quickly finding favour with the likes of popular prog-rockers Rush and electronic music trailblazers Tangerine Dream, polyphony could only be achieved with multiple SEMs so each voice/module still had to be programmed independently, which was quite a daunting task — even by somewhat shaky Seventies standards!
Fast forward to today and the truly twenty-first century musical landscape has changed considerably. So has music technology itself. Indeed, most musicians take polyphony and programmability for granted — though not necessarily that still-sought-after Oberheim sound. Ingeniously, iSEM quite literally taps into all this and more as a cutting-edge iPad app, putting more musicality at anyone’s fingertips than its analogue namesake designer dared dream possible back in Oberheim’s Seventies salad days — all the more so since Arturia has had the foresight to adopt Apple’s Audio Unit Extensions technology so soon after its introduction, and all at a fraction of the cost of Oberheim’s original heavyweight hardware!

iPad 2 (or higher) owners can purchase and directly download the latest version of iSEM from the App Store for €9.99 EURO/$9.99 USD/£7.99 GBP here: https://itunes.apple.com/app/arturia-isem/id673921187?mt=8

Valhalla Plate

What could be better than a $50 reverb? A $50 reverb that should be priced about 4 times higher. Valhalla makes some real classy plugins with some very high end features. Plate is no exception. This reverb packs every type of plate imaginable plus some.

ValhallaPlate is our algorithmic take on the classic plate reverberation sound. Seven original algorithms emulate the sound and behavior of real world steel plate reverbs, and take the sound into dimensions that physical plates can’t touch.

  • ValhallaPlate is true stereo, emulating a steel plate that has 2 input drivers and 2 output pickups. It can be run as a mono-in/mono-out, mono-in/stereo-out, or stereo-in/stereo-out plugin.

  • ValhallaPlate realistically models the physics of plate reverbs:

    • High diffusion, for reverbs that have maximally high echo density.
    • Frequency dependent decay time, for huge lows and clear highs, under the control of a single Decay parameter.
    • Dispersion, for creating 3D imaging in the decay. The reverb comes from outside the speakers, and decays into the depths behind the speakers.
  • ValhallaPlate extends the plate reverb into dimensions that real plates can’t reach:

    • Variable size, to control how metallic a reverb mode sounds. Small sizes result in more metallic delays, while larger sizes sound clearer.
    • Lush modulation, that eliminates any metallic artifacts, while retaining the pitch of the input.
  • Seven original reverberation algorithms:

    • Four reverb modes (Chrome, Steel, Brass, Cobalt) that model the resonance density found in real plate reverberators.
    • Three additional reverb modes (Aluminum, Copper, Unobtanium) that combine the 3D dispersive characteristics of steel plates with the high resonance density found in reverberation chambers.
  • ValhallaPlate builds upon the Valhalla DSP plugin heritage:

    • Minimalist, resizable 2D GUI, with self-documenting tool tip area.

    • A comprehensive preset browser makes saving, recalling and sharing settings easy.

    • Fully compatible with 32 and 64 bit DAWs (32/64 bit VST for OSX and Windows, 32/64 bit Audio Units for OSX, 32-bit RTAS for OSX and Windows, 64-bit AAX for OSX and Windows).

Native Instruments El Capitan Compatibility

Good news everyone! Native Instruments can work with the newest OS X. Lets hope Pro Tools follows suit soon with 11.

Please note that the compatibility issues connected with Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan are now resolved.
The latest OS X 10.11.1 update fixes the issue where Native Instruments Audio Units plug-ins did not pass the AU validation and therefore were not available in Logic Pro X.
New drivers are also available that fix the issues experienced by users of MASCHINE (MK1), RIG KONTROL 3, and older TRAKTOR hardware.

Slate Digital FG-Bomber

When Slate sends out an email, people read. In case you live under a digital rock, look at this new interesting addition to the Virtual Mix Rack.

Dear Audio Industry Professional,

Like many of you out there, my infatuation with pro audio dates back to when I was just a teenager.  And even back then, I knew in my mind what I wanted my tracks and mixes to sound like.

I wanted them to be impactful, dimensional, wide, and exciting.  I wanted the sounds to come out of the speaker plane and into the room, immersing me in the music.

Well, about a year or so ago, Fabrice and I began working on a process that could accomplish all of these amazing sonic attributes.  We used all of our analog modeling expertise, creating an extremely complex process that mixes harmonics, saturation, compression, filters, and more.  The result is called FG-BOMBER, and it has been one of the most praised plugins we’ve ever had by our internal beta team.

FG-BOMBER is an Analog Modeled Dynamic Impact Enhancer. It will increase impact, front to back depth, and width of your tracks and mixes, and can make your music sound more alive.

If you are a member of our Mix/Master or Mix/Master/FX Bundles, you can now download FG-BOMBER right from the Gobbler app (Mac Users).  If you are a Windows or Mac 10.7.5 or below user, please click here to download the installers
To get ALL Slate Digital Plugins including FG-Bomber, check out our Annual Plans or Monthly Plans.
If you want to purchase FG-Bomber, Click here. The intro price is only $99 (regular $129).

Softube Fix Flanger and Doubler

Two things modern music depends on heavily is doubling on vocals and flanging for those EDM transistions. Softube has made some incredible renditions of classic plugins and now they are adding another two originals to the lineup with Fix Flanger and Fix Doubler.

LINKÖPING, SWEDEN: from the mind of legendary audio equipment designer Paul Wolff comes the new Fix Flanger and Doubler. This package is made in collaboration with Swedish high-end plug-in developer Softube. Fix Flanger and Doubler takes the legacy and sound of classic flanging and vocal doubling of the 1960s, but with all the benefits of the digital world. Fix Flanger and Doubler will be available for purchase as of November 9, 2015.
In 1979, Paul Wolff formalized a vision which was turned into exclusive limited-edition hardware, later loved among musicians and sound engineers. In 2015, Fix Flanger and Doubler is the reincarnation of this vision — a plug-in package that handles hands-on flanging with unique stereo widening methods, as well as vocal doubling with lush chorus and rich textures.
Classic flanging reimagined:
Fix Flanger is versatility personified — capable of both classic guitar pedal-style flanging with an automatically swept flange, as well as direct interaction in the manual mode. A VSO mode features unprecedented hands-on control with emulated servo motor bounce. Added features such as tap tempo sweep, unique stereo widening methods, and selectable delay polarity makes Fix Flanger the Swiss Army knife of flangers!
Doubling made simple:
Fix Doubler delivers texture and extraordinary richness to vocals and polyphonic instruments. The streamlined interface, combined with Paul Wolff’s unique ‘Auto Double’ algorithm, makes it easier than ever to add lush chorus and rich layers to your vocal track.
In short
Fix Flanger delivers the sound of classic auto-sweep flanging, with extreme control and flexibility.
Unprecedented hands-on VSO flange control, with servo motor bounce emulation.
Fix Doubler provides lush chorus and rich textures to your vocals. ‘Auto Double’ uses a unique method of accurate flange effect cancellation to make a natural-sounding doubler effect.
