Arturia ISEM Adapts Audiobus

Arturia is always up for innovation and this is very apparent in the latest iteration of iSEM, iPad’s best soft synth. Audiobus support adds ease of connection between multiple apps.
As Arturia’s second supreme subtractive synthesizer recreation for iPad, iSEM has proven popular with both first-time buyers beginning a journey into the wonderful world of synths and also seasoned synth professionals like former Depeche Mode keyboard player/programmer/arranger Alan Wilder, who actively appreciates both its authenticity as an original Oberheim SEM owner and the latest developments possible via its iPad host: “Being the owner of the original hardware synth, I can confirm that this virtual app stands up, providing a combination of complete familiarity combined with total stability, versatility, and the welcome addition of plenty of presets, plus extra pages and functions.”

While Arturia always appreciates such support from acclaimed artists, appealing iSEM improvements abound in V1.0.2 as one of the first such synth apps to support all Audiobus 2 functions. Running as many apps in parallel or series as the host device can handle, Audiobus 2 can handle multiple, independent pipelines, with as many inputs, filters, or outputs as the user wants. Thanks to this Audiobus 2 support, iSEM users can cleverly save presets of their connection graphs and share them via e-mail or social networks. Needless to say, the musical world is getting smaller, it seems, while more musicians than ever can enjoy those thrilling SEM sounds!

Indeed, iSEM continues to do what it does best — providing iPad users the world over with an authentic recreation of the still-sought-after analogue sounds of Oberheim’s original dual-oscillator SEM monosynth and its subsequent integration into that Californian company’s pioneering polysynth developments. Ingeniously, iSEM quite literally taps into all of this and then some, putting more musicality at anyone’s fingertips than its namesake designer dared dream possible back in Oberheim’s Seventies salad days!

Today, then, it’s hard not to be impressed with iSEM offering so much to so many for so little. Just ask Alan Wilder!
Appropriate iPad owners can purchase and directly download iSEM from Apple’s App Store for $9.99 USD/€8.99 EURO/£6.99 GBP.

Ear Trumpet Labs Mabel

I’ve always been a fan of Ear Trumpet Mics. They have a very cool look and although I haven’t personally used one, the reviews are coming in pretty positive. I really like the swivel type head basket and dual cardioid capsule design they’re using on this one. If you’re looking for a unique looking mic with great components, look no further.

April 3, 2014—Ear Trumpet Labs, a privately owned company in Portland OR that makes handcrafted microphones, today announced the release of Mabel, a new microphone designed specifically for studio work. Mabel is a hand-built multi-pattern condenser microphone utilizing two cardioid medium-large diaphragm (26mm) capsules, designed primarily for capturing demanding sources like acoustic instruments, drum overheads, and vocals. Mabel features a unique copper-ringed head basket with brass grill work, held in a pivoting mount within a stainless-steel yoke, and a copper-and-brass body. The design is both visually stunning and extremely practical, as the pivoting head makes for easy positioning adjustments.
The capsules are a pair of fixed-cardioid electret condensers, individually tested and selected to match each other and strict design criteria. The circuit is a transformerless FET with fully balanced output, incorporating thorough EMI protection. Other electrical components in the signal path are of the highest quality: metal film resistors, polypropylene and polystyrene capacitors, and individually tested, hand-matched and biased transistors and JFETs. Internal Sorbothane shock and vibration damping helps to minimize vibration noise. The dual-cardioid-capsule design is an uncommon approach to a multi-pattern mic. It has advantages in an especially deep null at the sides of the figure 8 pattern and greater control over the directional frequency response across all the patterns. The circuit includes high frequency EQ tuned to the capsules, providing a very smooth high end.

Sensitivity: 25 mv/Pa (cardioid)
Output Impedance: 150 ohms
The Mabel is now available for $1000 directly from Ear Trumpet Labs.

Rob Papen Blue II

I use Blue constantly and think it usually plays second fiddle to Blade and Predator but I find that I reach for it a lot more than the others due to it’s great sound quality and initial patches. Rob Papen has added even more features in the new version of Blue simply titles Blue II.
Virtual instrument and plug-in developer Rob Papen Soundware is proud to announce availability of BLUE-II — an all-new reworking of its breakthrough BLUE soft synth for Mac (OS X 10.6 or higher) and PC (Windows Vista, 7, and 8) — as of March 10…
First released in 2005 after namesake company founder and sought-after sound designer Rob Papen formed the RPCX (Rob Papen ConcreteFX) partnership with music software developer Jon Ayers to create a powerful dream synth, the original version of BLUE has truly stood the test of time to remain a bona fide software synthesizer classic, much loved by synth players and producers worldwide to this day. But back in 2005 it already reflected Rob Papen’s cutting-edge, creative, and — most importantly — musical approach towards developing virtual instruments that truly stand out from the soft synth crowd. By first delivering FM and subtractive synthesis — subsequently adding Phase Distortion and waveshaping synthesis — into the creatively combustible musical mix, BLUE blew the competition away, as reflected in its runaway sales success. Rob Papen himself cleverly called it ‘Crossfusion synthesis’ since it covered so much musical ground so effectively. New dreams for old are an inevitable result of time and technology waiting for no one, however, so the time has come for Rob Papen to move onwards and upwards.
Today, therefore, marks the turning point in a long and winding developmental roadmap that has led to Rob Papen’s eagerly- awaited BLUE-II — bigger and better than it ever was! But BLUE-II remains true to the dreamlike ethos of its predecessor, with even more sound dimensions and features to its extended name, starting with six oscillators beating powerfully at its musical heart. These can be connected in various ways, together with two analogue-style modelled stereo filters with no fewer than 27 different filter types, an astounding range of processing and modulation options, serious sequencer, and an amazing arpeggiator. A new range of specially selected waveforms based on samples have been meticulously fashioned for creating new-fashioned and killer-sounding synth sounds to die for!
But BLUE-II is also easy to use, thanks to its user-friendly user interface with an innovative Easy Edit page for speedy sound changes, while the Bank Manager allows whistle-stop navigation through thousands of inspirational Rob Papen presets and artist sound banks covering a wide range of musical styles to suit all eager ears.
All told, then, BLUE-II represents an amazing journey into the dreamlike musical world of ‘Crossfusion synthesis’. By bringing blue sky thinking to virtual instruments, Rob Papen has succeeded in creating an outrageously original and immensely inspirational soft synth fit to follow in its predecessor’s fanciful footsteps — one that, quite simply, sounds stunning! So prepare to be blown away… again!
BLUE-II can be purchased as a boxed version from authorised Rob Papen dealers worldwide for €149.00 EUR (including VAT/tax)/$179.00 USD or downloaded directly from Rob Papen here: http://www.robpapen.com/buy-blue-2.html
Upgrades are also available as follows: BLUE owners can upgrade to BLUE-II for €44.00 EUR/$49.00 USD, while eXplorer II bundle owners can upgrade to the still-to-be-released eXplorer III — which will include BLUE-II and also the upcoming Punch-BD virtual instrument — for €44.00 EUR/$49.00 USD. (eXplorer II owners can also request a ‘temporary’ BLUE-II serial number if planning to upgrade to eXplorer III when released, while anyone who purchased eXplorer II in 2014 will qualify for a free Explorer III upgrade and can also request a ‘temporary’ BLUE-II serial number.)

Native Instruments Expansions: Marble Rims

Who doesn’t want to make the next big west coast track that hits the top of the charts. The laid back, in the pocket style of the west side comes to courtesy of Native Instruments with Marble Rims.

Native Instruments Introduces MARBLE RIMS Expansion for MASCHINE
Berlin, February 27, 2014 – Native Instruments today released MARBLE RIMS – a new MASCHINE Expansion offering producers the laid-back, sun-kissed flavor of classic and contemporary SoCal hip hop. Adding to the scope of included kits and sounds, MARBLE RIMS delivers exclusive recordings from renowned West Coast artists and producers.
Producers can choose from a palette of 40 lovingly-sampled instruments ranging from SoCal staples such as analog basses and leads, soulful electric pianos, and layered percussion, to live sampled guitar licks, one-shots and beat sequences. Benchmark keyboard instruments and synths such as the Fender Rhodes Mark 1, Hammond B3 Organ, a Minimoog Model D, and more were all carefully sampled then equalized using vintage EQs.
Exclusive to MARBLE RIMS are a collection of samples taken from live sessions with some of the most iconic producers and musicians of the urban West Coast. Guitar licks and one-shots featuring Marlon Williams of Warren G fame were recorded using custom and vintage equipment. Highlighting some of the unique equipment Marlon used was a 1978 Gibson Les Paul custom and a 1978 vintage Fender Stratocaster. Six urban kits and drum samples by rhythm virtuoso Dae One deliver classic West Coast beats along with samples designed by Hallway Productionz, and Amplified. Adding to the Expansion’s bold character are four special kits containing MIDI sequences by legendary keyboardist Kenneth Crouch.
MARBLE RIMS is available now exclusively at the NI Online Shop for $49 / 49 € / ¥ 4,800.

Native Instruments: Supercharger GT

No not THAT kind of supercharger. The type that can blow your brains out with transient mangling goodness or just a subtle enhance; the latest enhancement to the Supercharger plugin allows for simple compression with the turn of a knob. With controls like Saturation, Character, and 3 different types of styles of compression ensure this plugin can tackle all of your needs.

Native Instruments today released SUPERCHARGER GT – a compressor inspired by the rich, tube-driven sound of a boutique hardware unit. A feature-rich follow-up to the SUPERCHARGER compressor released in December 2013, SUPERCHARGER GT goes beyond modern tube compression by adding dedicated Saturation and Character modes and additional controls for complete sonic fine-tuning. SUPERCHARGER GT is available at the NI Online Shop for $99 / 99 € / £89 / ¥ 9,800. Owners of the original SUPERCHARGER can upgrade for a special price of $49 / 49 € / £42 / ¥ 4,800 – a $50 / 50 € / £43 / ¥ 5,000 saving off the regular price.
SUPERCHARGER GT was designed for simple yet comprehensive sound shaping. Producers can quickly dial in a wide range of compression effects using a single ‘Compress’ knob. The effect’s automatic make-up gain allows them to stay focused on the sound of the effect without having to compensate for the drop in volume compression can sometimes cause. Pre- set Attack and Release settings provide a starting point for setting SUPERCHARGER GT’s response to incoming signals – producers can start with Punch, Gentle, and Slam modes. Dedicated Attack and Release controls allow an additional degree of fine-tuning.
Aside from compression, SUPERCHARGER GT also delivers a set of tone- shaping controls that make it more than just a compressor effect. A ‘Saturation’ knob with Mild, Crisp, and Slam saturation types give users three ways to add harmonic content to their tracks. At lower settings, SUPERCHARGER GT offers subtle harmonic enhancement. At more extreme settings it delivers raw, distorted coloration. The ‘Character’ knob can fill in missing low end and smooth out unruly high frequencies with Fat, Warm, and Aggressive character modes adding to its versatility. Furthermore, a mid/side mode lets producers create space in a mix by applying the effect only to the left and right sides of a signal – perfect for adjusting stereo imaging. A detector high pass prevents unruly low end signals from mis-triggering the compressor. Combined, these features provide producers dynamic control, warmth, and sonic shaping in one convenient plug-in.

Pricing and availability
SUPERCHARGER GT is available as a software download at the NI Online Shop for $99 / 99 € / £89 / ¥ 9,800.
Owners of SUPERCHARGER can upgrade for a special price of $49 / 49 € / £42 / ¥ 4,800 – a $50 / 50 € / £43 / ¥ 5,000 saving from the regular price.

Drumatom

Love mixing but hate cleaning up mic bleed from drums? Want to spend time processing and making the drums shine instead of hunting and clicking? Well you need Drumatom. This new standalone software available on PluginAlliance will make removing mic bleed seamlessly and painlessly through their patented technology. The best part about this software is that it doesn’t  remove ghost notes and other rhythmic artifacts.

After an intense public beta phase we are pleased to annonce the V1.1 release of DRUMATOM. DRUMATOM is the first and only software that can help you reduce the crosstalk captured by microphones when you record drums with multiple mics without the use of noise gates, filters etc. Hear your drums as punchy and real as never before.
V1.1 is the very first official release of DRUMATOM. If you are already using the public beta you should download the 1.1 update now.
When we first demonstrated the alpha version of Drumatom, we found that we had a problem explaining what it’s all about. Explaining a completely new type of processor can be difficult! Well, let’s start with what Drumatom is NOT: Drumatom is not a noise gate or a drum replacement tool! Drumatom is a novel stand-alone application that can drastically reduce microphone leakage in drum recordings, based on patent-pending technology. In any case, your ears will do a much better job in deciding what it is. Please download the fully functional demo and listen for yourself!
Whether you call it microphone bleed, spill or leakage, it’s a thing that sound engineers have learned to live with since the 60’s, when multitrack recording technologies started spreading around the globe. It might not be an issue for most instruments, but as far as multichannel drum recordings are concerned, leakage is always there in every close-mic. Sound engineers go to great lengths to ensure that leakage is reduced, or turned into something “usable”. Most of the times, a sound engineer has to resort to using a simple time-domain switch (a noise gate) or a drum replacement tool. Noise gates might not always work and when they do, they often mess with the signal’s transients or eat away at the decaying portion. Drum replacement tools can be very helpful, but they are doing what they promise: they replace the drummer. Drumatom is a new option, one that gives you the opportunity to work with the sound that you so carefully recorded, helping you preserve the personal style of a human drummer combined with the unique sound of a well-tuned drum set.
