Xmas Idea #8 Sloppy Seconds Edition

Its pretty cool when you get enough awesome content on your site that you can re-post it. Its perfect for those days that the bipolar recording equipment industry decides to lock itself in it’s closet and I’m stuck out here having to make excuses!!
Today’s gift idea is perfect for someone starting out and owns a mac and wants an all in one solution for recording (Yea I got REALLY specific here didn’t I.) This is the Apogee One, a very small interface with a pretty good condenser mic built into it as well as inputs for instruments or other mics. Its $249 which isn’t bad for getting something you can plug in and start recording right off the bat.
Like I have said over and over again I travel a lot and I’m constantly looking to track ideas and not have to lug a huge interface and all the bells and whistles along. This interface gives me the option to either bring the rest or leave it and still be able to lay down ideas without feeling like you’re lacking proper equipment. This interface has 44.1/48kHz, 24-bit AD/DA Conversion, a condenser mic, and even software selectable phantom power if you want to use an outboard microphone. The One even features a balanced XLR preamp with +10 to 63dB of gain and an unbalanced 1/4? high impedance instrument input, 0 to 45dB of gain, ALL IN AN INTERFACE ROUGHLY THE SIZE OF A CELL PHONE!!! If you know Apogee, you know that they don’t make crap. This company makes world class converters and equipment that is second to none and I’m sure this is no different. Now that I don’t need to use my Mbox Micro, I’m pretty sure I will be making the swap very soon. I am however very sorry if you own a PC because I’m pretty sure it only works with Mac OS X, but you know, its really your own fault for buying equipment with an operating system not worthy for such an incredible piece of gear!
Once again, here’s the tech specs:

IGS Audio: Analog Cure For Digital Disease

The equipment coming through the news wire is INSANE today. THIS is the reason I started this site for days like this when I could show you some of the greatest outboard gear that the industry has to offer. It brings a tear to my eye to see so much great stuff coming out. Look at these two new products from IGS Audio.
A little background on the company from the site (Seems like Igor and I are on the same page because we both LOVE Hip-Hop. I really like this company)
IGS AKA Igor Sobczyk is well known producer in Poland. He was one of the first in the country to spread Hip-Hop nationwide. His first music projects (Ekspedycje 1999, Alchemia 2000) are considered as the foundation of contemporary polish Hip-Hop, especially in the Silesian region. The artists whom he recorded and produced are amognst others: Tede (3H), Abra Dab (Kaliber 44), Fokus (Paktofonika), Gutek (Indios Bravos, Mustafarai), Jajonasz. Currently he is producing the debut album for Poland’s fresh pop/r’n’b talent Losza vera.
Igor is also an outstanding engineer. IGS Audio is now one the most desired studio equipment brands in Poland and it is continuously expanding internationally. The original IGS Audio products qualify as pretendants to no.1. Clones of other brands produced by Igs Audio are accurate and excellent.
IGS is all about happiness in success.
IGS Studio has been operational since 1997. The IGS Audio brand was created in 2003.

First we have the EQP-2 Passive Stereo Equalizer.

The EQP2 consists of two blocks: The first block is a classic passive filter known from the EQP-1 device. The second block is a specially designed two-stage tube amplifier called Organic Amp. Due to its construction, passive equalizers’ culture is characterized by amazing sound. The new design includes a bypass relay, which allows you to instantly compare the results of your work. The equalizer has been divided into 4 sections: 2 for bass and 2 for treble. Bands are selected with stepped switches.

And just when you thought that was enough, IGS releases ANOTHER great product, the ONE LA, Which reminds me of a Teletronix LA-2A. Today is HEAVEN.

The IGS ONE LA is a photo-optical compressor, referring to the legendary solution of United Recording Electronics Industries. It is an input and output transformer balanced, full tube device. The input of the system is worked with a Sowter 4383 transformer, the output with Edcor 10k/600. Two 6N2P-EW 6N1P-EW dual-triodes are installed on the audio circuit, while the compression circuit isequipped with the 6N2P-EW triode and the 6AQ5 pentode, which control the work of the T4B photocell. On the front panel you can adjust the input sensitivity (GAIN) and compression threshold (PEAK REDUCTION). Additionally, you can select the operating mode between Compress and Limit. You can also set the meter to VU or Gain Reduction.

Fantastic!!!
Price for the EQP-2 is about $2250 US
Price for the ONE LA is about $1700 US

Xmas Idea #7 NSP Breakout Pedal

Wow, just yesterday, I was whining about how nothing was going on in the world of recording equipment, then BOOM BULDING KICK… EXPLOSION, Gear everywhere. I really didn’t know my crying at my desk of Everything Recording HQ was that loud that they all heard it and took pity on my poor soul an….

C’s Mom: Pssst Bryan, no one heard you crying except my daughter when you called her whining about not having anything to post so I delivered flaming bags of dog crap to all of the other recording sites and then went and gave the executives of all of the gear companies a nice stiletto heel to the butt crack and told them to get their act together. Funny enough, before I did that, I accidentally stepped in one of the “care packages” for the websites. I think that was the icing on the cake to get them up and running today. You’re welcome.

Well there you have it folks. I have people that can “get things done.” ……..
…… Hey look at this thing! More iPad stuff Christmas Ideas!!!!!

The NSP Breakout is a handmade, highly functional, professional audio interface for the iPad, and iPhone that connects through the headphone jack.
It literally breaks out of the iPhone’s headphone jack, so you can use all your favorite recording, signal processing and sampling apps. It’s mono design fits in perfectly with effects pedals and amplifiers.
The internal circuitry solves all signal, feedback and detection issues you may have sending guitar and line signals in and out of the iPhone and iPad, and allows for a plethora of uses, on stage, in the field, and at home, with guitars, mics, amps, PAs, etc.
The NSP is made with the highest quality components so that you can achieve optimum sound when recording or performing using your iPad or iPhone.
The BreakOut is designed to support the open source nature of apps and work with all sound apps. Within 25 minutes, and for less than $25 on iTunes, you can have a multi fx, pitch shifting, an 808 drum machine, auto-tune, and a visual grid sampler multi effects on you wherever you go.  And using the same device in all applications, allows you to fold your field recordings into your live show, and your melodies into your public art demonstrations.
The NSP BreakOut functions as an interface but is designed like an effects pedal with a true bypass switch to allow you to integrate your phone into your signal chain .  The size and components are sturdy enough for your tabletop setup and lightweight enough for your field recording jaunts.

The NSP is available for $115 and can be bought HERE

Black Lion Audio: AGB Compressor

In my constant search for everything Neve, I ran across this red hot piece of rack candy. The Black Lion Audio AGB Compressor. This is the latest in hardware from this impressive company. I’ve got a feeling this company is gonna become even more well known than it already is, especially given the price of this. When I first saw the rumors of this compressor, my initial thought was EXPENSIVE, but somehow through the grace of some cosmic miracle, these guys are selling this at the introductory rate of $895!!!!!! Simply amazing. I’ll be honest with you, if I made a TWO channel compressor modeled after a Neve 33609 series, I would make you name you first born son Rupert (in honor of the great Rupert Neve) then you would have to compete in a local dance off to save a rec center from being torn down by some evil big business man who wants to make a strip mall. AND that’s just for the interview to let me determine IF I would sell this to you. Then I would charge you well into the $2,000 range and then after you leave, swim around in my huge pile of cash. But then again, these people are upstanding citizens who want the best possible sound for you in your recordings and I’m just some dude who has no life and sweats when he eats.

Introducing another member of the BLA product line: the AGB Compressor. An homage to the venerable Neve 33609, the AGB is a two-channel diode compressor and limiter housed in a 2U rack mount chassis. Imagine a quick, responsive, low-noise compressor with powerful control features. It does everything from smooth and easy compression to weird rhythmic clicks to funky envelope tricks. It’s insanely fast and doesn’t choke when you really push it. Strap it across your drum bus and smash away. Give your snare a nice, dense crack. Use it for program material. The slower attack mode is great for vocals. Whatever you use it on, you’ll find it does the job well, and without raising the noise floor.
So where does our design differ from the original? For one, the signal path is a fully balanced, opamp-based circuit. While we’re using rotary potentiometers instead of stepped potentiometers, we’ve given you more control over things like input level and attack time. Like the original, the AGB uses input, interstage, and output transformers.

Tascam Portastudio: Yes Another iPad App

Look… I know I’ve been posting a good deal of iPad apps… I can’t control what comes out on the press wire and this one was a a lot more interesting than most of these obscure software companies releasing some mediocre new plug-in or virtual instrument. Honestly, I will probably own this soon and I’m hoping Avid sees this and makes some sort of Pro Tools built for iOS.

TASCAM’s Portastudio brings 30 years of easy-to-use home recording to your iPad. Based on the PORTA ONE recorder that revolutionized recording in 1984, the Portastudio app records up to four tracks with a vintage vibe.
Record one track at a time using the built-in mic or a headset microphone connection, monitoring on authentic VU meters. A cassette transport with position counter tracks your position while you mix with level, pan and EQ controls. When you’re ready to mix, the built-in mixdown function saves your song as a CD-quality WAV file. Your mix appears in iTunes when you’re finished, ready to share with friends and bandmates.
A generation of your favorite bands crafted their songs with Portastudios, now it’s your turn. Start capturing your songs with the company that invented home recording using Portastudio by TASCAM.

Xmas Idea #6

What?
Well EXCUUUUSSEEE me for not posting enough for you.
Shouldn’t you be working or something? Plus you’re totally interrupting my time with your mom (OH SNAP HE DIDN’T) by trying to fill your insatiable need to know what’s going on in the world of recording. You REALLY wanna know what’s going on in the world of recording… Not a lot to be honest. I’m really scraping the bottom of the barrel lately to find you information. Oh well
Anyways, this next gift idea actually works for anyone, but this works especially well for those who hate mice and use recording software. Basically, its a track pad for your PC but it uses multi-touch so all of your scrolling and whatever else you do that probably is sickening can be done all with the swipe of a finger. Good grief that sounds horrible. The Magic Trackpad is $70 and works with Windows and Mac. Its fairly easy to set up and looks pretty bitchin’.

Magic Trackpad gives you a whole new way to control what’s on your Mac desktop computer. When you perform gestures, you actually interact with what’s on your screen. You feel closer to your content, and moving around feels completely natural. Swiping through pages on screen is just like flipping through pages in a magazine, and inertial scrolling senses the momentum in your fingers as you move up and down a page.
Your fingers will fall for the Magic Trackpad. It’s made with smooth, wear-resistant glass that feels great to the touch. And it’s nearly 80 percent larger than the built-in trackpad on the MacBook Pro, giving you plenty of room to perform gestures. Because the entire surface of Magic Trackpad is a button, you can click on objects just as you would using a traditional mouse. And Magic Trackpad sits at the same height and angle as the Apple Wireless Keyboard, so you can go from trackpad to keyboard in one seamless motion.

I personally used it for a while there when it was just “Cakewalk” but when they switched to SONAR, it just got too complex. Its been years though so I hope they fixed all of their issues. C Demands Answers: Double Feature

I’m sure you’ve been asking a few questions of your own lately and this picture probably poses more questions, but now you see where C gets her rockin good looks… So today C and her Mom are going to grill me with an onslaught of questions. We all know how the ladies get when they team up so I can’t promise all of these questions are going to be recording related but I will try to keep them on track and you WILL learn something albeit, what you learn might be about something totally different than what you expect.
Now the reason I’m getting ganged up on graced with both of their presence(s) is not relavent but probably has something to do with me getting the SILENT TREATMENT last week and both of these lovely ladies have come to set me straight / interview me to see if I’m good enough for C,  but C continues with her segment because she claims she does it for all of you. (yeah ok… we all know its to stay close to your truly.) I’ll let them have the floor now.

Ok everyone, I want you all on your best behavior because today I’m bringing my mom in to help me so lets get a few things out of the way. NO she is not single, No… she is not single.. and oh yea… NO SHE IS NOT SINGLE. Now that we have that out of the way, its time for questions. Ed note: to make this easier C will be “C”, mom will be “M” and I’ll be dashing and debonair as usual. Watch how I RUN this segment.

Tonehammer: Your Dog Won't Hate You Anymore

Ahhhh… Finally a company after my own heart. In this world where people are way too uptight about their products, Tonehammer emerges. I really like how they don’t take themselves too seriously, just like this very site you’re reading.
Remember those calenders where you get to eat a chocolate for each day as a countdown to Christmas? Of course you do, you pathetic fat slob!! You probably ate them all the first day right? Now the incredibly witty guys over at Tonehammer have taken that same concept and replaced crappy cheap chocolate with free hand-made sound libraries. Not only do they hand record them personally, they use VERY strange devices to make them (one example being they all huffed a whole tank of helium just to make you a choir to cater to the little elves who sneak into your room at night to steal your socks and sing catchy little tunes like this.) So now that I’ve established these guys are pretty hardcore, go to their site and buy something from them right now… dooo it, dooo it do it. They’re even giving away free stuff!! If that isn’t enough motivation, watch their infomercial!
