Universal Audio SSL Series For UAD-2 Platform

Seeing as we just discussed plug-ins, Universal Audio picked a perfect time to release their version of SSL’s E- Series Channel Strip and G- Series Bus Compressor. One of my engineering idols, Chris Lord-Alge is a big proponent of the G- Series console, so much that he uses one exclusively to mix on so Universal Audio picked a great piece of hardware to make a software version of. This is a prime example of getting a great deal of bang for your buck seeing as SSL hardware is REALLY expensive and pulling a bus compressor out of one of their half a million dollar consoles is pretty much out of the question for the vast majority of us… I mean… unless you’re down for sneaking into Chris Lord-Alge’s recording facility with a hacksaw and some wire cutters, but we’re not advocating and B&E’s on this upstanding site, we’re juuuuuust saying going to prison is your only other option to own a piece of recording gold besides buying this plug-in from a company with an amazing track record of gear, like THIS piece right here that we used as our very first in depth gear feature of what you need to buy NOW. So add this SSL goodness to your list as well.

Universal Audio, a manufacturer of high-quality audio hardware and award-winning UAD-2 Powered Plug-ins for Mac and PC, today announced the release of the long-awaited, Solid State Logic-authenticated, SSL E Series Channel Strip and G Series Bus Compressor plug-ins for the UAD-2 platform.

C Demands Answers: Plug-Ins

This week’s segment is a great question seeing as I’ve posted so much content related to it, but didn’t explain it for all of the people who (a) just read this site for my nonsense or (b) the people new to the recording realm. See this is why you always include a smart female to proofread your site because she’s dated enough idiots that she understands their train of thought, thus making life even easier for us non idiots right?! I’m gonna go ahead and hand this over to our girl next door who happens to really dig guys who record music.

I’m back guys! Yall are all looking as handsome as ever (editors note: who are YOU looking at C?) SHUT UP Bryan! You all look very nice and well dressed (except that guy reading the site in his undies. You might wanna get that mole checked out.) Ok.. Bryan… I read the site everytime you call me in the middle of the night bawling, asking “Am I funny enough for you to love me now?” and you’re always talking about these things called Plug-Ins. Oh and I’ll go ahead and answer the above question with an “almost” but what are these Plug-Ins and why are you always harping on them?

*Wipes tears from eye First off people… I don’t call her crying. sniff sniff, I just had something in both my eyes and was trying to drown it and we all know if anything, my sense of humor is at least “interesting.” Plus I was a little horse that night and I asked, “Am I funny enough for you to LOVE me now” oh that was what you said… awwwwkwarrrd
But to answer your question, plug-ins are software that work in tandem with whatever recording program you use. Say if you use the recording software Cubase, the plug-in would be a piece of software that has a certain job inside of the program to help make the mix sound better. There are also different formats of plug-ins that only work with some programs or operating systems. The formats are usually VST, RTAS, AU, TDM and you can check the software you use to see what type you need.
There are TONS of plug-ins that serve almost any purpose you can think of from adding echo, to making a news broadcast sound like the people are singing. Yes, THIS was made with a plug-in called Auto-Tune. You hear it everywhere whether its blatantly in your face or just used to touch up vocals. There’s not a single song on the radio now that doesn’t use some sort of pitch correction software. There are other types of plug-ins that can emulate different types of microphones as well and these are just a few of the crazier ones. Most of the time you’re seeing me talk about two major types of plug-ins that are very popular, EQ, and Dynamics. The EQ plug-ins are the ones that will boost your bass or make the vocals sound more crisp and the popular trend nowadays is to emulate some of the classic analog (non computerized) hardware that is either too expensive or rare to own. The dynamic processors are the same way. These are made to take a track and bring it more forward in the mix or add warmth to it without making it distort. These are usually called Compressors. People use compressors for a ton of different reasons from changing the whole sound of a drum track or making an acoustic guitar louder with more body. I could seriously go on for days about the types of plug-ins but I won’t because girls have short attention spans about this stuff and we don’t want to lose what is probably the only female in here with us. I will say this, Plug-ins do serve a great purpose in that they save us from having to own a separate room for all of the physical gear it would take to do them, but don’t get too wrapped up in them. Proper pre-amps and “what’s a pre-amp” C… you had your question already! and recording practices will sometimes eliminate the need for plug-in use.
Do you have any parting words C?

see this people.. she talks IN YouTube Clips…Great…. she’s giving me the silent treatment for not answering her pre-amp question…sigh…. Would you tell her that I am not amused and ask her if I’m funny now?

New iLok 2.0 Now Available

For the new guys and gals out there, this is an iLok. Its an integral part of the recording industry seeing as it holds all of our licenses to our software in one USB Key. I’ve had my iLok now for a long while and was wondering when iLok was going to get a face lift. Not that there’s anything really wrong with the old design, but with technology becoming more compact, I figured iLok would update as well. Plus I really do worry that I could break it because it felt pretty fragile. Well lets have a tearful farewell to old blue and say hello to it’s new sexier looking replaceme…..
ok why did my Pro Tools just stop working… And my waves plug-ins.. no no no no no no no….. My old iLok, out of jealous rage just humped a thumb drive and threw itself off of the desk and shattered!!! You’re were a filthy filthy harlot old iLok… I should’ve never introduced you to my Mbox Micro.

You asked, we delivered. The new iLok is smaller, stronger, customizable and has a much higher capacity than the original. Together with iLok.com, it is the best portable software license solution available.

  • Smaller: two iLoks now fit side by side in adjacent USB ports
  • Stronger: sturdier USB connector and solid body makes it one tough iLok
  • Higher Capacity: holds over 500 software license authorizations
  • Customizable: add a custom label under the protective sleeve – no more guessing which iLok is which
  • Hip: sleek black design and cool blue LED, need we say more?

I really like the look of the new iLoks and seeing as mine just went off to… well the trash can… after it got jealous of the new one and broke itself, Im going to need a new one….
Dear iLok,
Hello, how are you? I am fine… Well not really, you see, today I saw you have a new iLok 2nd generation out and I was really excited. So excited that I posted it on my incredible site which one commenter said “Makes me want to drink alcohol” which I think is a compliment due to alcohol being used to celebrate awesome events. Anywho, I posted about how physically attractive your new iLok was and it caused my old iLok to remove itself from my computer, engage in lewd acts with a USB stick, and then throw itself off of the desk because you made a product that was slimmer, and more attractive. Please see it in your heart to see that I am hurting right now over the loss of my good companion and send me a new one so I can make a tribute song to my old one.
Love,
Bryan at EverythingRecording.com

Elysia Alpha Compressor: Now Available

Not too long ago I had a friend show me THIS video from Elysia on their Xpressor and I was blown away and now they’re making software. They’ve tasked Brainworx, the people who made the SPL plug-ins, to make this software version of the piece of hardware by the same name. This was mainly used as a mastering compressor but they made also created a single channel version.

The alpha compressor plugin is the software reincarnation of our famous mastering compressor. It gives you a painstaking emulation of the sound and features the hardware is known and popular for – programmed by the code experts from Brainworx.

Free Software: StormGate1

I’m all about free software / Plug-ins, but unfortunately most of it is made VST and I won’t give up my Mac / Pro Tools combo so there aren’t very many free RTAS plug-ins. Yet I’m not a selfish person so I’ll keep you in the know about free plug-ins on any platform. Just bake me some M&M chocolate chip cookies and we’re even. So what we have here is a delightful plug-in that creates custom gate patterns. Basically the sound you get out of this is that Timbaland synth sound. Like THIS. Its actually pretty popular right now in rap and dance music and can even be used in rock. I have a variation of this plug-in that also creates a random filter on each gate sequence and that steps it up to a whole other level. You can take any old boring synth sound and make it GOLD with one of these.

StormGate1 is an unique and innovative amplitude rhythmic gating effect which lets you draw the gating patterns freely by hand or with the aid of powerful drawing tools.
It can be used as a creative tool to create rhythmic parts out of anything (pads, noises, etc…), as an enveloper, or even like a simple but powerful dynamics processor to simulate compressor sidechaining or in more creative manners.
StormGate1 offers 16 different amplitude patterns. The internal sequencer can be synchronized to the host song position and is capable of chaining (extending) the patterns.
You can draw the gating envelopes simply by selecting the appropriate drawing tool and operating on the big envelope display. There are many other functionalities in this small plug-in, please read the user’s manual to learn more!

He Likes It: Hey Mikey…2nd Generation!!

Sorry about the site being scarce of any posts. Some jackass (lightning) decided to blow out the dome we have out here on the boat. Yes I’m posting from the Ocean (if you’re headed this way, could you bring me some Buffalo Wild Wings please) Anyways…. Blue has announced that the new 2nd generation Mikey is here. This makes recording even MORE portable offering very clear recording for most iPods, and iPhones. I’m gonna be honest here, the iPhone speaker isn’t half bad but I’d bet brother’s house that this mic blows it away. This has a pressure gradient cardioid condenser capsule in it and can deliver CD quality audio using the free app “bluefire” to spit some hot fire freestyling into your ipod or iphone, just don’t actually try to spit fire into it. I’m bot buying you another one homie. I wonder if I can use this as a speaker phone?!

The all-new Mikey is the perfect tool for mobile recording. Featuring two custom-tuned Blue capsules for stereo recording, a line-input, USB pass through and a stylish updated 230-degree rotating design. Mikey’s three gain settings allow for a versatile recording experience for everything from a loud concert to a whisper. Record lectures, voice notes, live music, interviews, and more. Mikey also comes with its own soft carrying pouch for convenient storage and protection while on the go. Mikey turns your iPod into the coolest mobile recording device around!

Subscriber Of The Month: Madbull Studios

I’m big on helping other people get their product out. Its part of the reason I started this site. Now I’m going to use it in a different area… You… the readers. Throw a comment on a post. Let me know you’re reading. Add my Facebook Page. Basically just show some sort of love and I’ll return the favor by helping you get your work out there. Our first subscriber of the month is Madbull studios. He found this site through sheer dedication and I bet through wading through thousands of pages looking for reviews on FXpansions Geist Plug-in. And from what I hear on his Soundclick page, its definitely paid off. The beats sound great and the Geist mixes are crisp with plenty of low end. This is the type of stuff they should put on their page to show this program off at it’s potential. To view all of MadBull Studios’ work (and I’d keep checking back for new beats with Geist) check out his page.
Madbull Studios
Once again, if you’re interested in having your music plugged on the site, all you need to do is let me know one way or another.
Also, you like what he did with Geist and own an iPhone or an iPad? Go check out this program here. I’ve been playing on it all weekend and I can’t put it down. For $10 bucks you can’t beat it.

Telefunken CU29 "Copperhead"

Ohhhh man. The new gear just keeps rolling in post-AES. At first I was a little worried because during and right after AES, I didn’t see a ton of impressive gear coming through, but once the companies settled back in and got over the mass gear hangovers, the press releases came in like a flood! And most of them don’t even come close to making me as happy as what Telefunken has been up to. *Props knee up on chair *cue the inspirational backdrop music!! This company, like Neve, is a staple in the recording industry, and in actuality go hand in hand. Telefunken has graciously allowed the populous (who before couldn’t all afford the impeccable microphones) to also get to take part in using the equipment that shaped the industry of microphones into what they are today. The best part is they’re not doing it in the vein of other companies that piece together lackluster cheap looking microphones. They’re still putting their best foot forward for the working guys as well. I mean just look at that mic!!! Its gorgeous. I still want the AK47 more but asthetically, I think that mic is the best looking out of the whole RFT line and maybe even some of the higher end mics as well. I only wished I looked as attractive. *stop inspirational background music abruptly.

Rupert Neve Designs: A 500 Series Pre!! 517 Pre/Di/Comp

CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY!!! The 500 series is officially cool now that the one and only Rupert Neve has designed a module for it. Sure the Radial Workhorse is great but this cements the 500 series as “hitting the big time.” For the new guys, the name Neve is synonymous with recording. He revolutionized the way music today sounds with his groundbreaking consoles and outboard gear. Now he has decided to take a crack at the 500 series market and if you can’t already tell, I couldn’t be happier. This module features a pre-amp similar to the 5017 standalone unit the company already sells. They just about packed everything you could fit into a 500 series module. I can’t wait to get my hands on this.

At the 2010 AES Convention, Rupert Neve Designs announced the company’s first foray into the 500 Series with the Portico 517 Pre/DI/Comp module. Based on the Portico 5017 Mobile Pre, the 517 provides world class, transformer-coupled preamp, compressor and DI circuitry, with Vari-phase, Silk and DI/mic blending capabilities for $950 U.S. list.
