Inspired by the original “Sound of Tomorrow 67”, Soundelux USA announces the U99 multi-pattern tube microphone; a versatile, high-quality workhorse mic that rises to any task a studio can throw at it.
Featuring a k67 dual symmetrical backplate dual membrane capsule along with the signature Soundelux USA “fat” switch featured on the U195 microphone and an innovative new high frequency “boost-flat-cut” switch, the U99 has enough proximity effect to sound full, but not so much that it sounds “boomy”. This makes it a natural on vocals, acoustic instruments, and drums thanks to an onboard pad switch. The added benefit of allowing the user to set the brightness and fullness characteristics of the mic via switches means unrivaled flexibility for the engineer, producer, or artist.
“Just about anything you would use a vintage U67 for can be captured with the Soundelux USA U99, but with the warranty and reliability of a new mic without the maintenance headaches of a vintage mic,” said David Bock. “For vocals, it provides creamy warmth with nice air, without an overwhelming proximity effect. It delivers breathtaking realism to acoustic guitar tracks and preserves the subtle timbral characteristics of acoustic pianos. Whether close up, overhead, or as room mics, the U99 brings sparkle and depth to drum kits without the midrange ‘boxiness’ of small diaphragm mics. For ADR and VO use, it is prized for its articulation and ability to grab dialog without unwanted artifacts. And for premier live sound, this mic is great on sax, piano, and overheads.”As all Soundelux USA mics, The U99 uses a “new old stock” tube and true linear high current power supply for fullest possible sound. The electronics circuit differs from the vintage 67 in its departure from non-removable frequency shaping components and the removal of gain controlling negative feedback. It also features a larger output transformer to radically increase the low frequency headroom. The Soundelux USA U99 is hand made in the USA by David Bock and its components have been carefully auditioned and selected for the best sound and lowest noise, not to satisfy a low cost spreadsheet. The mic comes with it’s own proprietary N470 power supply, six pin XLR cable, and bottom thread shock mount.

Focusrite Simplifies Red and Pro Tools HD
One of my issues with the new Pro Tools business model is the Digilink License debacle whereby if a Pro Tools HD software license is bought without hardware, a separate Digilink license is needed to interface with hardware… even in some cases other Avid systems. Well Focusrite has heard everyone’s cries for help and offer a free Digilink license with every purchase of Red hardware.
Focusrite announces that, together with AVID, it has created a simpler way for customers to combine Red 4Pre and Red 8Pre interfaces with Pro Tools | HD 12.6 and up, making their music easy to make. If customers buy and register a Red 4Pre or Red 8Pre interface after 18 January 2017, a Pro Tools | DigiLink I/O License can be placed on their iLok free of charge.
To download the license, customers simply:
1. Register their Red 4Pre or Red 8Pre interface
2. Follow the link to the Avid website
3. Sign in to their Avid Master Account or create an account
4. Select their iLok account or create an account
5. Sign in to their ilok.com account
6. Deposit their Pro Tools | DigiLink I/O License
Once customers register a Red 4Pre or Red 8Pre interface, they have four weeks to access their Pro Tools | DigiLink I/O License.
This offer follows the availability of Red 8Pre, which is one of the most compatible audio interfaces of all time. The Red 8Pre includes two front-panel high-headroom instrument inputs, dual Thunderbolt 2, dual Pro Tools | HD DigiLink and Dante network audio connectivity.
In addition, 64 inputs and 64 outputs (including a total of 16 analog inputs and 18 analog outputs) and eight of Focusrite’s specially developed, digitally controlled mic preamps answer the need for more microphone inputs and a higher I/O count.
The latest feature to be added to Focusrite Control for Red 8Pre, coming soon for Red 4Pre, is the Input Routing tab. This allows for the default channel routing table to be rearranged so that all hardware input signals required can be accessed and sent to a DAW in a user-defined order.

Kush Audio Omega Model 458A
Just as promised and foretold in the Omega review (link HERE), more transformer models are showing up. The latest is Kush’s venture in tube and iron with the Omega Model 458a.
The Model 458A has a fat tone that breaks up in a delicious way, growing increasingly crusty but never harsh, turning cymbals from brass to gold, and gluing bass into a molten fiery blob of love.
Model 458a represents Kush’s first foray into tube modeling and generates a truly next-level distortion, far and away the warmest, smoothest, and most ‘alive’ distortion plugin we’ve ever heard, capturing that peculiar ‘tube sag’ sound when confronted with hard-driven bass transients.
Riding just on the edge of the 458a’s breakup can transform something limp into something animated and alive, with a fat bottom and velvety top-end presence that can’t be duplicated using conventional eq techniques.
If you subscribe to Kush plugins, Omega Transformer 458a will be added to your license, just download the installer from The House of Kush when it’s available.

Plugin Alliance Black Box HG2
Every DAW needs a great plugin on the mix bus to smooth things out. Acclaimed hardware designer Black Box has teamed up with Plugin Alliance to release the HG-2.
There’s a good reason why celebrated mix engineers like Dave Pensado, Bob Horn, and Jack Douglasuse the high-end Black Box Analog Design HG-2 tube processor on their mixes. The boutique stereo processor’s multiple, diverse tube circuits not only make tracks sound richer and fuller, they also make them sound louder, bigger and punchier at the same peak level. Much more than a mere distortion box, the HG-2 can impart subtle harmonic coloration and sparkle without compromising fidelity, or add brilliant saturation that totally changes the character of a sound.
Among the HG-2’s features:
- Faithful emulation of the high-end Black Box Analog Design HG-2 tube processor, with additional digital controls – Input Gain, Density, Calibration, Air and Mix – providing a greatly expanded palette of tube flavors and saturation
- Modeled transformers and separate gain controls for virtual 6U8A pentode and triode tubes add warmth, body and tube sweetness to thin mixes and sterile mono and stereo tracks

Focusrite Scarlett Octopre Series
The Octopre series has been a standard for home recording artists as well as professional studios who need extra channels for a good price. Now the Octopre series have been updates with Scarlett preamps, featuring higher headroom and even a model with built in dynamics. With all of these new features, a studio can throw any task at Octopre and watch it handle it with ease.
Focusrite is debuting two new Scarlett OctoPre mic-pre units: the standard Scarlett OctoPre and the Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic. With eight channels of Focusrite’s second-generation Scarlett preamps and built-in Focusrite precision 24-bit / 192 kHz conversion, Scarlett OctoPres present an ideal way of adding eight extra mic/line inputs to a DAW or digital console. And there are eight analog line outputs too, perfect for stand alone use in a live sound environment.
The Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic adds analog compression and D/A conversion to the standard Scarlett OctoPre described above.
The preamps feed precision 24-bit Focusrite A-D converters that operate up to 192kHz sampling with 109dB dynamic range, making the OctoPres ideal for hi-res audio recording. Dual ADAT ports enable eight channels to be used at sample rates up to 96kHz, while four channels can be transferred at 176.4/192kHz sampling. The Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic model adds eight channels of 24/192kHz D-A conversion too, with 108dB dynamic range, fed from dual ADAT inputs. A button switches the eight line outputs to be sourced from the ADAT inputs, via the D-A.
The eight second-generation Scarlett preamps, with newly-designed high-headroom instrument inputs, will take everything that a band can throw at them. Both OctoPres provide phantom power throughout and accurate five-segment LED metering. The OctoPre offers a pad on every channel and front panel, high headroom instrument inputs. The OctoPre Dynamic comes with optimized headroom as standard, capable of handling the same input levels as the standard OctoPre, plus analogue, soft-knee compression on every channel for natural and transparent control of dynamics, right up to more aggressive compression effects.
Scarlett OctoPre and Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic are ideal for expanding any high quality, multi-channel recording system. With their high-headroom mic, line and dual instrument inputs, they’re ideal for tracking drums as well guitars, keyboards, vocals – and more.
*Often overlooked, ADAT I/O is a simple and easy way of bringing extra channels such as mic preamps into your system, with its affordable optical connectivity carrying up to eight channels of audio, and it’s available on many interfaces and consoles.

FabFilter Releases Pro-R Algorithmic Reverb Plugin
I don’t get very excited about reverbs as much as I used to but if anyone can breathe new life into reverb, it is FabFilter. Pro-R is Fabfilter’s algorithmic reverb that claims to do everything from natural to other-worldly.
AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, November 15, 2016. FabFilter is proud to announce availability of FabFilter Pro-R, a high-end algorithmic reverb plug-in with musical controls and a very natural sound. Its advanced algorithms have been carefully designed to blend well with the source and fit easily into a mix. FabFilter Pro-R is bursting with innovations like the intuitive Space control that seamlessly switches between dozens of room models with automatic decay time adjustment, and the industry-first Decay Rate EQ concept that introduces free adjustment of the decay time over the frequency spectrum. Together with the built-in Post EQ and an abundance of high-quality factory presets, FabFilter Pro-R delivers pristine sound quality and maximum ease of use.
A musical approach
FabFilter Pro-R takes a musical approach to reverb, offering user-friendly, non-technical controls like Brightness, Character, Distance, and Stereo Width to tweak the reverb sound. The stepless Space control lets the user fade between dozens of different, carefully-tuned room models, and automatically chooses a matching decay time for a natural-sounding result. Behind the scenes, each of these settings influences the internal algorithms in multiple ways to deliver exactly what was intended — without requiring a degree in reverb science.
Shape the decay time
The decay time of a real room often varies wildly over the frequency spectrum, which is one of the key ingredients of a room’s reverb character. To simulate this, the industry-first Decay Rate EQ concept in FabFilter Pro-R offers completely free adjustment of the decay time over the frequency spectrum. Since it uses parametric EQ bands instead of a traditional crossover system, it provides much more flexibility to shape the decay time characteristics. Together with the integrated six-band Post EQ, designing reverbs of any character has never been easier.
Key features:
• Beautifully designed room models, ranging from small ambiences and rooms to large concert halls and huge cathedrals.
• Carefully developed to easily sit in the mix, without causing undesirable coloration, density or phase problems.
- Gorgeous Retina interface with large interactive reverb display featuring Decay Rate EQ and Post EQ curves.
- Very easy to set up, with user-friendly, non-technical controls.
- Space control, which smartly and smoothly combines the room model and decay time of the reverb — choose from over a dozen carefully designed room models and seamlessly vary between them, without hearing clicks or unwanted artifacts.
- Decay Rate control, changing the overall decay time from 50% to 200% of the current Space setting.
- Intelligent Stereo Width control, ranging from pure mono to true stereo and beyond.
- Distance control to adjust the proximity to the sound source in the selected space.
- Character control that changes the sound from a clean, transparent decay to a lively reverb with pronounced reflections and echoes — all the way to an over-modulated chorus-like effect.
- Perfectly tuned Brightness control, affecting not only brightness, but also the decay of high frequencies.
- Predelay control via the bottom bar, ranging from 0 to 500 ms, with optional tempo sync.
- Innovative six-band Decay Rate EQ with Low/High Shelf, Bell, and Notch filters. (Compared to the commonly used low- and high-crossover system, the Decay Rate EQ opens up a world of possibilities by giving users full control over the decay rate at different frequencies.)
- Six-band Post EQ to equalize the final reverb sound with Low/High Cut up to 96 dB/oct, Low/High Shelf, and Bell filters. (Together with the Decay Rate EQ, this lets users design reverbs of any style or character.)
- Real-time spectrum analyzer that also visualizes the decay time at different frequencies.
- Full Screen mode, offering a large analyzer display and Decay Rate EQ and Post EQ controller.
- Multiple interface sizes: Medium, Large, and Extra Large.
- Retina support on OS X and High DPI support on Windows.
- GPU-powered graphics acceleration.
- Supports common Pro Tools hardware control surfaces.
