Contest: JJP Mixing Competition

Jack Joseph Puig is another one of those guys like Chris Lord-Alge that you think you’ve never heard of, but he’s all over the radio. His production and mixing have been on COUNTLESS hits and now is your chance for him to hear your mix (granted I don’t mislead where to send your entries so I win.)

This is how it works: You send us your best mix using JJP Artist Signature Collection plugins, and Jack Joseph Puig (Goo Goo Dolls, John Mayer, Lady Gaga) will pick the winner. He’ll be basing his decision on the overall sound of the mix; of course, having a great song sure won’t hurt your chances.

The Prize
The winner will receive their choice of the JJP Artist Signature Collection or the JJP Analog Legends bundle, and the top three songs will be streamed on the Waves website for all to hear.

There are a few ground rules:

  • You must use JJP Artist Signature Collection plugins somewhere in your mix—the more the better.
  • You’ll also need to describe how you used them: Which plugins, on which tracks, which presets, plus any other info you feel is important.
  • Submissions should be in mp3 format, maximum file size 10 Mb.
  • You must own all the rights to the song you submit.
  • The winner will be required to send us their original session.
  • No more than two entries per person.

If you don’t already own the JJP Artist Signature Collection, you can download the JJP Artist Signature Collection demo and use it for the competition. If you’ve already demoed it, call Waves Tech Support at +1-865-909-9200 ext. 1, and they’ll give you a special 7-day demo extension.
The JJP Mixing Competition will run from November 15th until December 15th 2010, and the winner will be announced shortly thereafter.

HO-LY Crap: Manley Mic Maid

Remember THIS post? Well the folks at Manley Labs lashed out at me with wreckless abandon. WHY hasn’t anyone else ever thought of such a genius piece of gear?!

Never before has auditioning mics been so easy. The Manley MicMAID is designed to let you audition and select between up to four microphones and four microphone preamplifiers. Simply plug them all into this box, push the buttons, and pick your favorite combo! You can hear every mic through every pre, match output levels for each and every signal path, and save your favorite settings with the push of a button – all without unplugging a single cable. There’s even a front-panel DI with variable phase adjustment to guarantee a perfect match with your other inputs. As with all Manley products, the MicMAID is hand-built right here in the USA. Start cleaning up YOUR workflow with a MicMAID! Shipping begins first quarter of 2010.

Manley MicMAID Features:
– Connects 4 mics and 4 micpre’s through a convenient matrix
– +/- 19.5 dB gain adjust (0.5 dB steps) for each of the 4 signal paths
– Recall settings for gain, mic & pre combinations
– Unit generates phantom power to mics (selectable)
– Variable phase, ground lift for front-panel DI
– High-quality, gold-contact sealed relays throughout
I’d sell my left nu… roomate’s kidneys for this piece of gear. Come to think of it… would you like to come over tomorrow for a UFC party? There will be soo many drinks the bathtubs will be full of ice. Those knives? Those are just for breaking up the ice. You also get to meet my friend Dr. Korthauer. And if your drink tastes funny and you get sleepy, its probably just my water.

Mojave MA-300

At AES David Royer introduced the Mojave MA-300 which is basically a multi pattern version of the MA-200. I own the MA-100 and have used the 200 and I can vouce that its a workhorse. You can pretty much use it for anything and it sounds great so as you can expect, this is a very welcomed upgrade to the already stellar product. The mic features the exact same tube, capsule, and body. Only difference is the number on the front and the -15dB pad and the high-pass filter.

IK Multimedia: New Authorization System

In my FIRST PART of my REVIEW of the T-RackS Singles (COUGH…. LOOK OVER HERE), I had one small minor complaint about the authorization system of the software. Well IK Multimedia have listened and released a new system to authorize their stellar software with little to no effort.
The new Authorization Manager is a standalone application that greatly simplifies the way IK users can register and activate their IK software and plug-ins.
Users can now launch the Authorization Manager application to register and authorize all their IK software in one convenient place, with a simple automated process. They no longer need to load multiple web pages to register and activate the software.
Authorization Manager features:

  • Ability to manage all products in one place. The Authorization Manager allows users to manage all current IK Multimedia products registration and authorization processes in one simple interface.
  • Only the serial number is required. Pertinent registration information is now transmitted transparently without the need for manual codes insertion by the users other than the Serial Number.
  • Multiple product registration/authorization. Users who purchase more than one title can register and authorize all of them at the same time. This feature is perfect for ‘bundle’ owners or users registering more than one product in the same session.
  • Save time with offline authorization. If the computer you want to activate IK products on is not connected to the Internet, the new Authorization Manager makes it easy to activate products on them.

Friday Gear Fest

You know what, I’m loyal to you people. So loyal that I’m going to be completely honest. There’s nothing cool I really think is worth you reading about this week. I know AES was last week and I’m supposed to be all pumped and so overloaded with info that I’m posting 20+ entries on everything that has any iota of interest to the recording enthusiast, but in all honesty, I’m never going to post something that I don’t find interesting myself. I’ve read through so many sites and new things coming out and I’m just not excited about them. Call it possible overload of info but I don’t think that’s the case. Of course there is a great deal of nice gear I place on here, but I didn’t really have anything that I felt was good enough to spotlight. So I DARE a recording company to email me some new product that will blow my mind. Look I’ll even give you my personal email address: [email protected]. I owe it to all of my readers to post interesting content and not just vomit whatever shows up on the press releases. My site isn’t about getting money for advertising or some huge mass following. This site is about getting the information that matters to the people whom I feel need it. And because I don’t really see anything of extremely awesome to feature, I’m going to feature nothing. Sad day… I know, but I’d rather be honest with all of you and give it to you straight instead of just giving you words to read about some piece of gear that I didn’t even enjoy reading about.

A GREAT Cause

I know this doesn’t have much to do with recording but its such a good cause I have to post it. If you’re planning on buying an amp, you might want to consider a Diamond Amp because 10% of the sales from buying an amp will go to providing musical gear for the troops overseas who couldn’t bring over instruments. I mean… being over there being fired at by Derka Derkas is bad enough, but not being able to express your anguish through the majesty of song is just as bad.

Diamond Amplification today announces Diamond’s 2010 Support Your Troops benefit. CEO/Owner Jeff Diamant and business partner Terry Martin have put together a program to turn 10% of all proceeds from sales of Diamond products between November 1 and December 31, 2010 into musical equipment that will ship overseas for military troops. Many enlisted men and women are musicians but are unable to transport their instruments while on deployment. This campaign will provide guitar amplifiers to troops serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“We have always offered discounts for active-duty military personnel as well as war veterans,” says Diamant. “Terry and I both want to do something more for our troops. We get lots of requests for gear from military personnel overseas and we just want to give them a little taste of home, and a little reminder of what they’re fighting for.”
To further support the campaign, Diamond Amplification is creating a Facebook Fan Page. The page will allow the troops to not only communicate amongst their fellow enlisted musicians but also allow family, friends, and fans back home to share in the experience. Additional considerations are also in the works to use the page as an opportunity for troops win even more equipment and for fans to show their support.
Diamond’s new benefit is a joint idea with active-duty Special Forces Sergeant Major Billy Varga. “Billy is a great friend to us and to Diamond,” says Diamant. Varga, who not only is and has served overseas; plays guitar in his original metal project, Motorjunkie. Diamant says “Billy and I discussed doing something for the troops and came up with this program. Billy is handling all the logistics to get the gear over there and helping us place it in the right locales to make sure it gets put to good use.”
“I am more proud of our artists who have stood up to help and support the program than I am of our involvement in it,” added Diamant. A number of Diamond endorsed players have added not only their name, but their own contributions, including Tim Mahoney (311), Zach Myers (Shinedown), Jason Krause (Kid Rock), Clint Lowery (Sevendust), Jason Null (Saving Abel), and Zoltan Bathory (Five Finger Death Punch) have all agreed to provide their own “care packages.”  The packages include hoodies, shirts, CD’s and other items from each of their respective bands to ship over with the Diamond Product. “Mahoney even is throwing in a Diamond from his personal collection to add to what we send,” Diamant notes.
Diamond will be aggregating all sales from November 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010, then preparing gear equivalent to 10% of its sales. That gear will ship courtesy of the US Armed Forces to bases overseas directed by Varga along with all the care packages donated by Diamond Artists.  All Diamond Artists listed in this release have agreed to make themselves available for comment.

Bryan Shouldn't Leave His Site Software Up

Zack here… Bryan made the mistake of going to bed and leaving his laptop up with his WordPress site up so now I get my time to shine. Now I know this site is about recording but I have a serious matter to talk about and I’m going to use this awesome recording site to raise awareness.

I Heart Guitar Review: Avid Mbox and Mbox Mini

One of my fellow bloggers and friend Peter Hodgson posted a review on the new Mbox line. HERE is a link to the full article. Here’s a piece of the article. For the rest click the link above.

Pro Tools is, of course, the industry standard recording platform, and for good reason. It’s extremely flexible and it facilitates the creative process by being only as complicated as you want it to be. The new Mbox line-up is the first to be released under the name of AVID, the company which recently acquired Digidesign, and this is the third complete overhaul of the Mbox range. As you might expect, the new-look Mbox line-up features several key hardware differences over the previous version, as well as a cosmetic makeover that brings the look more up-to-date. There are three units in the series (Mbox Mini, Mbox and Mbox Pro), all designed by the same engineering team behind the top-of-the-line ProToolsHD systems. I checked out the first two, and compared them to my trusty Mbox 2 Pro, which I’ve had for about four years now.
Both the Mbox Mini and the Mbox interfaces feature premium analog signal paths and high-performance analog-to-digital converters. The mic preamps are of a higher quality standard than the previous incarnation too – an important point, as the one real criticism I’ve heard levelled at previous versions is that the mic pres are perhaps a little lacking and occasionally require backup from the occasional outboard preamp.
The Mbox Mini’s converters deliver 24-bit, 48kHz sound while the Mbox ups this to 24-bit, 96kHz. The Mbox Pro goes all the way up to 24-bit, 192kHz with ProTools HD, or up to 96kHz with Pro Tools LE. Pro Tools 8.0.4 is included with whichever package you purchase, and it’s contained on a single DVD (Pro Tools 9 is released later this week though). The two new Mboxes on review are connected via USB, although the Mbox Pro is still FireWire capable.

And make sure and check out I heart guitar blog. He’s one of the few of the bloggers who doesn’t do this for the money. Even to the point where he spent money out of his own pocket for a CONTEST that  MY GENIUS DRAWING was a winner. Yea you’re jealous as well you should be.

Rumor Mill: Ultimate Ears Plays With Our Emotions

Hot off of the press from Harmony Central is this little ray of sunshine. Ultimate Ears is in collaboration with EMI’s Capitol Studios to make in ear monitors that you can mix on. This is great noise (typo but it works) for just about everyone who is in the recording industry. It gives you the convenience of being able to mix in just about any environment. Being away from home so much makes this ideal for those projects I need a rough mix on while gone. I don’t necessarily think this will replace a properly tuned room but I definitely think it will make mixing on the go just a little more accurate. My biggest complaint with most in-ear headphones is they try to compensate for lack of quality by boosting frequencies or making the headphones vibrate to give the simulation of quality (you know who you are.) Having a set of in ears with flat frequency response is a welcome change. Let’s hope this happens.

RME Babyface Now Shipping

Pardon me for not posting as much. I’m currently working on something big I’m going to try to feature on the site. I promise in a week everything will be back to normal and I’ll be making countless fart jokes and stupid stories that are questionably true.
Continuing the tradition of portable interfaces that can do just as much as the big boys, except light it’s farts, (Well look at that I’m already back) here we have the RME Babyface. I own a Fireface 800 so I can vouch for RME on this one. They really do make a great product and I bet this is no different.
Lets see what RME has to say about their product:

The long and eagerly awaited RME Babyface, the new ultra-mobile USB 22-channel audio interface, is now available.
Equipped with the latest 192 kHz AD- and DA-converters and two reference class microphone preamps the bus-powered Babyface delivers two high end analog recording channels and four analog playback channels, plus ADAT/SPDIF and MIDI I/O in an attractively shaped enclosure.
The Babyface connects to the USB 2.0 bus, but is also compatible to USB 3 chipsets. It has been uncompromisingly optimized for highest performance under Windows and Mac OS by using customized firmwares for every operating system. Like other RME USB interfaces, the Babyface provides revolutionary ultra-low latencies even with multiple channels.
The next generation of Total Mix delivers hardware mixing/routing with lots of new features and a highly improved usability. The unbeaten DSP mixer now not only matches features of high-end digital consoles but even adds effects like a 3-band parametric equalizer, reverb and echo to the mix.

This is a bit pricey for a smaller interface but you really are getting the whole package. Plus it’s one of the first USB3 compatible interfaces. I’ve used the pre’s in my Fireface and I would say they’re just as good if not slightly better than the pre’s on my Digi 003. As usual go buy it HERE. For more info on RME, click HERE
