Pro Tools 11 is Here!

It is with a non heavy heart and CPU Usage that I proudly leave the world that is 32 bit architecture and move into the land of bigger highways for information, a faster engine to fly down said highways, and of course easier handling. Pro Tools 10 was a step in the right direction and definitely a good swan song to the 192 I/0 and now legacy components of the non HDX Variety. Of course Avid will support them for a while and they will still function just as they did. So to all I’m leaving behind, I bid you good luck in all of your travels, Enjoy all of those beloved RTAS Plugins I so painfully leave behind, and continue making great music.

Avid today announced the availability of Avid Pro Tools 11, a major upgrade of its industry-leading digital audio workstation that redefines music and audio production for today’s workflows. This latest version enables audio professionals to take on the most demanding productions with new, high-powered audio and video engines, 64-bit architecture, expanded metering, and direct HD video workflows.
With Pro Tools 11, audio professionals get exponentially more processing power compared to previous versions—using the same hardware—to create bigger, more complex sessions. The new Avid Audio Engine enables customers to monitor record inputs at ultra-low latency without sacrificing plug-in performance. The Avid Video Engine supports playback and editing of a wide range of HD video formats right in the Pro Tools timeline, simplifying collaboration between mixers and video editors. And offline bounce to disk speeds up the output of mixes while ensuring ultimate accuracy. For more information, click here.

HomeRecordingWeekly Song Writing Contest

Guys I wanted to give you an opportunity to get in on this great contest with some really cool prizes. www.HomeRecordingWeekly.com has put on a songwriting contest and wants to hear your music! Here’s how you participate.

Songwriting contest details….
Get your songs finished, in a “compressed ZIP folder” (here is a video that shows how to do this) and sent in as an attachment, in an email, with the words Song entry in the email title heading. Yes, it will be a lot of information, but I can take it! Here are the rules for entry……
No professionals please. One song per entry, and only one entry. Even though it runs for three months, you only need to enter once. I will be checking out each and every one of the songs, so please stick to you and your friends.
I do not choose winners based on the quality of the recording. I base my decisions on the song, and only the song. What is a song? I think a song is words (lyrics) and music of any type. If you have spent money to get your song recorded, sung, mixed, or mastered, then this contest is not for you. After all, my website is named Home Recording Weekly. You must also perform the following……
1) If you have not yet done so, please “like” the Home Recording Weekly Facebook page.
2) If you have not yet done so, get your free “Acoustic Treatment” EBook by entering your name and email in the appropriate box, in the upper right hand corner of Home Recording Weekly.
3) Send me your song, as a “ZIP folder”. The email you need to use is [email protected]
I will accept your entries, or songs, over the next three months, picking three winners as I go.
Here is how I do this.
I collect your non professional songs, written by you and or you and your friends, and choose three that I feel are the best.  I check out your song, to see if it is yours, and then place it in a folder with the other songs. I announce one winner after each month has passed.
Once a winner is selected, I play it on the Home Recording Weekly podcast, and then I send you your prizes. I would love to get you on the podcast, too, but you certainly do not have to. I ask for information about your home studio, and information about how the song was recorded. All of that gets published on the Home Recording Weekly website as well.

UVI Ultramini

The folks at UVI have had their hands pretty busy lately releasing product after product, but this is the brass ring. I’ve been seeing the ads for this all over the place and am VERY VERY excited about this. Ultramini is HERE. I’ve been looking for something fresh and exciting in the synth world to take over for Analog Laboratory. This seems like it may be just the ticket.

UVI introduces UVI UltraMini, a hybrid instrument that includes two fully independent instruments with uniquely skinned GUIs – inspired by the Minimoog D 1971 and the Minimoog Voyager XL 2011 (Limited Edition).
The Minimoog was made available to the public in 1971 and continued to be produced with very little change over the next 10 years. Considered the most popular synth ever by some, there’s no doubt the instrument has led a prolific life, leaving a massive wake in its path – changing perceptions and influencing synthesizer design to this day. The Minimoog has a near-perfect balance of simplicity and sonic beauty.
One of UVI’s specialties is making hybrid instruments. High fidelity sample-based waveforms produced by real circuits; in real machines give the instrument a pure sound from the start. Then accurately modeled filters and effects are used on the backend to shape and control the sound, spending precious CPU cycles only where they’re needed. For this approach to work, you need to build an amazing library of sounds and marry them to a truly advanced DSP engine. This is exactly what UVI have done for UltraMini thanks to hundreds of man-hours of tedious multisampling and the award-winning UVI Engine™.
Main features:
3-oscillator configuration, amplitude and filter key follow, unrestricted polyphony, mono retrigger, per-oscillator amplitude, stereo, color and drive control, a built in bit crusher, phaser, delay, limiter and our advanced algorithmic reverb – SparkVerb, built-in phraser and arpeggiator assignable per-oscillator, step and LFO modulations and a huge library of expertly crafted presets.

Price: $149.00

Elysia X-Filter 500 Series

Elysia is one of those companies who take the standard of studio gear and raise the bar even higher. I use my Alpha Comp plugin on every mix somewhere so I’m sure this 500 Series EQ unit they’ve made will be no different. What you get here is a top-of-the-line stereo linked EQ at a good price. Let’s see what Elysia have to say about this.

The xfilter 500 is a true linked stereo EQ in the 500 series format. It gives you the expensive sound of an all class-A equalizer in a surprisingly affordable package, with a precise stereo image based on computer-selected, stepped potentiometers and low tolerance film capacitors.
This EQ is serious about flexibility. It offers high and low shelf bands which can be switched into high and low cut filters with resonance, two mid peak filters with wide and narrow Q, plus additional passive LC stages with shielded coils for a glorious top end.
With its exceptionally open sound, straight transient projection and solid punch, the xfilter is the perfect match for your xpressor – or any other piece of delicious outboard gear!

The xfilter 500 is now available for $975 / 649 €*

Avid Documentary on Abbey Road

We all know about Abbey Road Studios. Wouldn’t you like to be a fly on the wall at a session in this iconic studio? Well if not, go away. If so, then boy do we have a treat for you. Avid gives us all access to emerging band, Strangefruit recording tracks from their new album. Episode 1 is out now and soon more episodes will premiere.
Avid has launched Inside Abbey Road, a web-based documentary series set inside the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. In the series, Grammy-nominated producer Greg Wells (Adele/Rufus Wainwright/Pharrell Williams/Katy Perry) records and mixes emerging UK band Strangefruit’s new song, using Avid’s industry leading music and audio post-production DAW, Pro Tools®|HDX. The song, “Tell Me,” is the first single from the band’s upcoming debut album release, Between The Earth and Sea.
The documentary series shows Wells working with Strangefruit, a group that describes its musical influence as “fuzzed out and leftfield indie rock, plangent folk and vintage jazz.” Viewers will get a rare inside look at the creative decisions made in pre-production and hear recording tips and advice from Wells about improving every aspect of a project, from tracking to the final mix.
The first episode, Preparing for the Studio, is live now on the Avid website. The next three episodes will premier:
• May 23: Going to Abbey Road Studios
• May 30: Getting the Sound
• June 6: The Producer

Help Launch A Career

Everything Recording has decided that since the PR Model for most pro audio companies is a little lackluster at times, that we are going to use this page to launch careers. If you have an artist or ARE an artist who I think is cool, I’ll feature your project. This week’s project is one I’ve invested a great deal of time and money into. Ike Allday is an artist I have worked with for about 2 years. I’ve done all of the production and mixing. It was a learning experience for me because this is my first rap album to be involved in. Now Ike needs your help to get promotion.

This album is essentially a sound track to my life at different stages and times, it’s a soundtrack to all of our lives. Celebration, struggle, tragedy, triumph, poverty, school, youth and the fear that comes with it are some of the topics this album touches on. My main focus was to give you music that you could actually talk about later, music that makes you think, dance, love, cry or smile. It has been a challenging journey up to this point and our biggest obstacle still remains. We need YOU! You have the power to help us bring this album to life and share it with the world. So, we ask you to give whatever you can, help how ever you can, spread the word to as many as you can. Your support is critical and appreciated greatly.

  • THE GOAL: $3500 to cover the cost of
  • Music Video: we have teamed up with eighthourfilms to produce an out of the box and very unique video experience
  • music marketing company that will help push this album and video past my short reach of my Facebook and twitter network
  • Physical copies of the album: signed physical copies of the album to be distributed to our supporters
  • T-Shirts: A limited amount of unique original design “Late Arrival” t-shirts to be given to supporters.

STRETCH GOAL: If you guys can help us get to $5,000 we will have just enough to shoot TWO videos. Two is waaaay better than one so I say lets do it. Also I will record and release an exclusive bonus track and send everyone an advanced download link! (People like the words “advanced” and “exclusive”…right?)

Presonus Studio One Instructional

I’m finding that Presonus Studio One is making a quick rise as a big player in the DAW World. I haven’t had a chance to mess with it yet but it looks surprisingly a lot like Pro Tools from the screenshots I’ve seen. To get everyone up to date, is available on www.lynda.com. This should get you started in the world of this surprisingly well received DAW.

PreSonus® announced today that Up and Running with Studio One, a two-hour course of video instruction on PreSonus Studio One®
DAW, featuring producer and remixer Josh Harris, is now available at lynda.com. To promote the new course, online learning company lynda.com is offering a seven-day trial membership to all registered Studio One users.
“Audio is a segment within our online library of tutorials that is quickly growing in popularity among music professionals,” said David Franz, lynda.com content manager for audio. “Up and Running with Studio One represents a significant addition to our library that gives learners a great introduction to the software.”
In his Studio One course, Harris quickly demonstrates how to work with the powerful, yet easy-to-learn DAW, beginning with the Start page and with setting up your artist profile and audio devices. He then shows how to set up and start recording a new song, including punching in and using track layers.
Next, Harris moves into editing audio and MIDI, explaining such important editing functions as comping, trimming, and time-stretching audio; quantizing MIDI; and editing MIDI velocities. He then covers the main mixing features, including using effects chains and presets and working with automation. He also discusses the unique mastering features of the Studio One Project page. Harris wraps up the course by demonstrating how to share music with the world, including publishing songs to SoundCloud®, promoting songs on Nimbit®, and using PreSonus Exchange.
