Audiofile Engineering: Quiztones for iOS

Ever heard a song and wish you could figure out what frequencies the engineer was boosting to get the mix? Me neither, because I know everything about audio engineering and could out mix Chris Lord Alge in my sleep. (Shifts eyes) But for the rest of us idiots (crap I blew my cover by including myself in the word idiots) there’s Quiztones. This app for iOS will train your ears using tones with frequencies boosted as well as loops to further your mixing skills.

Audiofile Engineering, creators of professional audio software for Mac OS X and iOS, have recently acquired Quiztones (http://quiztones.net), an ear training application for audio professionals and musicians, and released it as an App for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Quiztones founder Dan Comerchero joins Audiofile Engineering as a Product Manager.
Quiztones is designed to train the ears to instantly and intuitively recognize frequencies. This is useful for tasks like mixing, adjusting EQ settings, and identifying and eliminating feedback.
As musicians and audio professionals, we spend a great deal of time analyzing frequencies, whether we’re adjusting them for a good mix in the studio,  for  immediate  release

Native Instruments: Vintage Compressors

Oh look, another 1176, LA-2A compressor plug-in. Native Instruments decided that the Guitar Rig bundle needed some vintage flavor to it so they tasked one of the best analog emulation software companies in the biz, Softube to build these. Good move NI, good move.
Speaking of the 1176 and LA-2A, I’m actually working on a review as we speak of IK Multimedia’s versions of these two compressors. Maybe I can get my hands on these plug-ins and see how they do in comparison to the IK version.
Native Instruments has just introduced VINTAGE  COMPRESSORS, a set of faithfully modeled classic dynamic processors for  use in GUITAR RIG 4 and in the free GUITAR RIG PLAYER. Produced in  collaboration with DSP experts Softube, the collection comprises three  of the most distinctive and revered high-end studio compressors, and can  be used to creatively treat a comprehensive range of instruments and  sounds with the highest level of sonic fidelity and profound vintage charm.

VINTAGE COMPRESSORS is the first release in a new range of professional  studio effects based on the GUITAR RIG effects framework. Developed in  collaboration with

Waves Kramer MPX Master Tape

MORE Analog emulation. Waves have decided to tackle the daunting task of recreating another piece of analog gear. This time we’re looking at a very rare machine made out of an Ampex 350 transport with 351 electronics. This is similar to Magnetic, but offers extra effects like wow, flutter, and delay.
Wait… so you’re saying I can use this program to add wow and flutter THEN use Capstan to take the flutter out of a track. Studio owners, take note… This could add a few extra hours to the bill for the artist for “unexpected issues.” It’s like they say, “The customer is always a moron right.”

Developed in association with Eddie Kramer, the MPX Master Tape plugin is modeled on a rare machine consisting of an Ampex 350 transport and 351 electronics. With adjustable tape speed, bias, flux, wow & flutter, and noise parameters, the MPX provides comprehensive

Vienna Symphonic Library: Hybrid Reverb

Up until lately, I only thought Vienna Symphonic Library just made string libraries, but boy am I wrong. I just bought the Vienna Ensemble and it’s an extremely powerful plug-in and I bet this is no different. It seems to be a very intuitive reverb. Let’s see what they have to say about it.

The Vienna Symphonic Library team is introducing an all-new audio processing plug-in for their software bundle Vienna Suite. Hybrid Reverb combines convolution impulses with algorithmic reverb tails, providing extremely flexible editing options in an easy to use and intuitive plug-in. Millennia Ships First HV-35

I actually own an HV-3 8 channel pre-amp and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it except that it is very fragile and if you don’t do everything right and use it a ton, channels will break, but I think they’ve probably fixed that with the 500 series.
Well today some lucky bastard got one..

Millennia’s HV-35 500 Series preamp module starting shipping the second week of May.  The first unit found its way to the Lunchbox of Donal Hodgson, multi award-winning engineer/producer, currently working with Sting.
“For me it was a no brainer when I heard that Millennia were releasing a 500 series mic amp.”
“I put 48 channels of HV-3D into Sting’s tour rig and I wanted access to that super clean pure sound in my portable 500 series rack.”
“The HV-35’s instrument input is fantastic.  Acoustic guitars sounds warm and very present.  I am extremely happy. If you have a 500 series rack you should have at least one HV-35, it’s that simple.”
The HV-35 mic preamp is Millennia’s acclaimed HV-3 circuit in a compact 500 Series module. The HV-35 features a front panel instrument input, DC coupled ribbon mic mode with 10dB gain boost setting, 80 Hz rolloff filter, 48V phantom, 15 dB Pad and Polarity flip.  The gain control is continuously variable.

JZ Mics Vintage 12

JZ Mics in their infinite and awesome wisdom have decided to grace us with another new mic. This time they’ve improved on the legendary AKG C-12. One of the great things about JZ Mics is the look. These mics have an extremely classic look and I would almost be tempted just to buy it just to put up in the studio for show.

JZ Microphones is now shipping its new LDC Vintage 12 condenser microphone. Following in the footsteps of the hugely successful Vintage 47 & Vintage 67 microphones which were inspired by the classic Neumann originals, JZ Microphones now offers their version of the legendary AKG C12.
The Vintage 12 incorporates the best qualities of the original C12 and enhances them with features unique to JZ such as the Golden Drop Technology which provides a more detailed and transparent capsule response. The replacement of the original C12 tubes with high quality transistor technology provides equivalent frequency response with fewer maintenance and care issues.
Unlike other companies that simply make copies, the JZ philosophy in re-creating vintage microphones is to combine classic qualities of the originals with innovative technologies that provide enhancements. The validity of this approach is evidenced by the success of the first two JZ Vintage series models, the V47 and V67, which combine unique innovations such as internal, adjustable shock mounts with vintage qualities of the originals.
In 2007 JZ Microphones was established in Riga, Latvia. After twenty years of designing several dozen successful microphones, Designer Juris Zarins decided to redirect his experience and passion for design into his own line of handcrafted recording microphones. JZ Microphones have resulted from the marriage of open-minded design and a deep understanding of fine microphone construction. JZ Microphones combine all of the elements critical to world-class microphone design; patented capsule technology, precision electronics and innovative industrial design.
As far as I can research, the price on this bad boy is $1913.00. Well crap… so much for buying it just for decoration… That’s kinda pricey for a studio ornament. I guess I’ll have to buy it AND use it.

IK Multimedia Updates & Offers Better Pricing

We all can’t have perfectly tuned rooms to mix in and IK Multimedia has let us know that’s ok by them, they’ve got our backs with ARC. This system uses a mic to analyze the room and correct the room modes by EQ’ing your speakers to take care of the issues. It’s great for those dining room studios your wife won’t let you hang bass traps and wall panels in because she says they don’t go with her “horrible taste in decorating.” Well she didn’t say it quite like that, but that’s what I would’ve heard.

IK Multimedia announces the version 1.3 update of its acclaimed ARC (Advanced Room Correction) System. This new version adds native compatibility with 64-bit applications and operating systems and is the perfect companion to the company’s T-RackS® 3.5 mixing and mastering suite.
The ARC System also has a new pricing structure that makes it more affordable than ever for users to bring custom control room tuning to their own studios both large and small with advantageous price reductions starting at 50% off of the previous systems’ prices.
The ARC System delivers the most advanced solution to acoustical problems for any DAW-based studio. Combining a professional calibrated measurement microphone, standalone software that captures sound information and calculates proper room correction, and a multi-platform plug-in: this technology will improve how your studio sounds forever.
ARC features the revolutionary Audyssey MultEQ® technology, which measures acoustical information throughout the listening area in your studio. It then combines this information to provide an accurate representation of the room’s acoustical problems. The equalization solution then corrects for both time and frequency response problems more effectively and efficiently than any other room correction EQ on the market. The result is a clear and reliable representation of your mix. Regardless of the acoustical issues in your studio, what you are recording, mixing or mastering becomes immediately clear and reliable and your studio sound will improve forever.
Features
• The first and only room correction system in a plug-in for DAW-based studios
• Includes a calibrated measurement microphone, measurement software and multi-platform correction plug-in
• Improves clarity, stereo imaging and frequency response, for faster, more reliable mixing
• Revolutionary Audyssey MultEQ® technology corrects frequency and phase response not only for the engineer’s ‘sweet spot’, but also multiple points in the room
• Step-by-step setup measurement wizard will have you up and running in minutes
• A convenient, unique, mobile correction solution for the traveling engineer
• Sonically ‘treat’ your room so you can finally trust the sound of your studio
• Natively compatible with 64-bit applications and operating systems

The native version of the ARC System costs $299.99/€229.99* with a cross-grade option at $$249.99/€189.99*. The TDM version of the ARC System costs $349.99/€269.99* with a cross-grade option at $299.99/€229.99*. An upgrade from the native version to the TDM version is available for $99.99/€74.99*. The ARC System version 1.3 is now available from the IK Multimedia online store and selected music retailers.

Elysia Gives Us Presets!!!

Remember THIS review? Yea, I hope you own this plug-in by now. If not, GO BUY IT RIGHT NOW. These guys have seriously reinvented mastering compressors on top of making them useful for single tracks as well. Now they’ve made life even easier by giving us some of their tailored presets.
We have received quite some requests for presets ever since we have started to release our products as plugins. While discussing this at the Musikmesse 2011, sound designer and early elysia adopter Denis Goekdag kindly offered his support.

Denis started straight away and created ten presets for each of the four elysia plugins currently available. On top of this, we have added the suggested settings from the alpha compressor and mpressor manuals.
Of course these presets can only be starting points for your own explorations. Please keep in mind that especially the threshold and ratio values have to be adapted to your specific audio material…

To download the presets, click HERE. I already have and they’re really helpful starting points.
