Native Instruments: Vintage Compressors

Oh look, another 1176, LA-2A compressor plug-in. Native Instruments decided that the Guitar Rig bundle needed some vintage flavor to it so they tasked one of the best analog emulation software companies in the biz, Softube to build these. Good move NI, good move.
Speaking of the 1176 and LA-2A, I’m actually working on a review as we speak of IK Multimedia’s versions of these two compressors. Maybe I can get my hands on these plug-ins and see how they do in comparison to the IK version.

MORE Analog emulation. Waves have decided to tackle the daunting task of recreating another piece of analog gear. This time we’re looking at a very rare machine made out of an Ampex 350 transport with 351 electronics. This is similar to Magnetic, but offers extra effects like wow, flutter, and delay.
Wait… so you’re saying I can use this program to add wow and flutter THEN use Capstan to take the flutter out of a track. Studio owners, take note… This could add a few extra hours to the bill for the artist for “unexpected issues.” It’s like they say, “The customer is always a moron right.”

Vienna Symphonic Library: Hybrid Reverb

Up until lately, I only thought Vienna Symphonic Library just made string libraries, but boy am I wrong. I just bought the Vienna Ensemble and it’s an extremely powerful plug-in and I bet this is no different. It seems to be a very intuitive reverb. Let’s see what they have to say about it.

Millennia Ships First HV-35

I actually own an HV-3 8 channel pre-amp and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it except that it is very fragile and if you don’t do everything right and use it a ton, channels will break, but I think they’ve probably fixed that with the 500 series.
Well today some lucky bastard got one..

Millennia’s HV-35 500 Series preamp module starting shipping the second week of May.  The first unit found its way to the Lunchbox of Donal Hodgson, multi award-winning engineer/producer, currently working with Sting.

JZ Mics in their infinite and awesome wisdom have decided to grace us with another new mic. This time they’ve improved on the legendary AKG C-12. One of the great things about JZ Mics is the look. These mics have an extremely classic look and I would almost be tempted just to buy it just to put up in the studio for show.

JZ Microphones is now shipping its new LDC Vintage 12 condenser microphone. Following in the footsteps of the hugely successful Vintage 47 & Vintage 67 microphones which were inspired by the classic Neumann originals, JZ Microphones now offers their version of the legendary AKG C12.

Elysia Gives Us Presets!!!

Remember THIS review? Yea, I hope you own this plug-in by now. If not, GO BUY IT RIGHT NOW. These guys have seriously reinvented mastering compressors on top of making them useful for single tracks as well. Now they’ve made life even easier by giving us some of their tailored presets.
We have received quite some requests for presets ever since we have started to release our products as plugins. While discussing this at the Musikmesse 2011, sound designer and early elysia adopter Denis Goekdag kindly offered his support.

Denis started straight away and created ten presets for each of the four elysia plugins currently available. On top of this, we have added the suggested settings from the alpha compressor and mpressor manuals.
Of course these presets can only be starting points for your own explorations. Please keep in mind that especially the threshold and ratio values have to be adapted to your specific audio material…

IK Answers My Prayers: Black 76 & White 2A

Exciting news!! Today one of the great classic staples in recording has been released by one of my favorite plug-in companies. IK Multimedia has released their versions of the 1176 and LA-2A. Now I know a lot of companies have made their versions but after I’ve used their classic compressors single plug-ins, I’m pretty set on IK, as being just as good, if not better than Waves.

IK Multimedia is proud to announce the release of two new T-RackS mixing plug-ins that are modeled on two of of the world’s most renowned analog compressors: the Black 76 Limiting Amplifier and the White 2A Leveling Amplifier. These prestigious effects are available as single plug-ins for the most popular DAWs, or they may be integrated in the new T-RackS suite of mixing and mastering effects, now updated with 64-bit compatibility, both in standalone and plug-in modes.
The Black 76 Limiting Amplifier is modeled after what is probably the most used, most known, most wanted, and most universally recognized compressor / limiter in the audio industry. There are probably no professionally created records without tracks using this unit! It’s a true legend and a piece of history. The engineers that made this FET based compressor reached a level of cleverness and magic that only true visionary geniuses can achieve. While there are many revisions of this hardware, IK Multimedia modeled the LN version, revision E, because it’s the one that has the most sonically recognized and wanted character, thanks to its input transformer and class A output stage.
This compressor can be used on literally everything: drums, drum sub-mixes, vocals, bass, guitars, piano, choirs, brass, strings, etc. It adds its sonic footprint to the sound that for many reasons simply makes music sound better. Vocals, for example, will gain presence, consistency, clarity and punch in a way simply not obtainable with other units. Drums will gain power and density with total control over the level of “snap”, and guitars will get a magic midrange zone that makes them truly sing. The Black 76 is a must for mixing, but thanks to the perfectly stereo linked version provided with the MS option, it can also be effectively used for mastering if used with care!
The White 2A Leveling Amplifier is based on a legendary vintage unit that is entirely tube-based. It’s a totally different device in terms of construction where all the compression magic happens inside an optically coupled element formed by a fluorescent panel and some photocells: the famed T4A element. There is no electronic circuitry involved with the compression itself. It’s just a tube amp with photo-resistors, lit by a fluorescent panel driven by the output signal. At the time of this invention, there were not many ways of making an audio compressor: only variable-mu and optical. Optical was the simplest one, and if proper elements for both the light emitting panel and the photocells were matched, magic happened.
