Wooo Woooo All Aboard The Gain Train

Like most things that start shipping, I very stupidly break the story long before it comes out.
American manufacturer Kush Audio has begun shipping their Gain Train, a totally transparent Class A expandable monitor controller system with a small footprint and a revolutionary price point.

The Main Gain – the system’s base module ($499 MAP) – is a two in/two out standalone monitor controller featuring independent L/R output muting, a mono switch and tri-color Peak/RMS metering.
The Function Junction module ($499 MAP) expands the system’s functionality by adding two additional stereo inputs and outputs, talkback with level control and auto program-mute, as well as dual headphone amps with independent level controls and top flight signal path. All Function Junction i/o is via a rear-panel d-sub, allowing the system to be configured for any application.
With a focus on sleek industrial design, innovative product concepts, and artistically intuitive user interfaces, Kush Audio is redefining what customers want and expect from their pro audio gear and the people who build it. Employing groundbreaking pricing strategies & unparalleled customer service & support, Kush Audio has rapidly positioned itself at the vanguard of pro audio design and manufacturing…and has every intention of staying there.

I still won’t buy one because its poo gas brown and it won’t match anything in my studio. Maybe if the make a special edition “EverythingRecording” purple edition I’ll get one.

Presonus Helps Us Tune Drums

I don’t care how many millions of dollars in outboard gear you have and if you drank the blood of Chris Lord-Alge, but if you have poorly tuned drums, you can only go so far. Sure yes, there are plug-ins like Slate Digital Trigger, that will replace your drums for you but ask yourself this. Do you want to capture the drummer you are recording’s performance, or someone else’s. Ohhh someone elses, your drummer claims to be a human metronome but plays more like he has epilipsy? Well the just move on to the next post, but I must warn you, drums tuned right help!

Drummer Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett is a living legend. A spectacular
performer, he’s best known for his 30 years with Michael Jackson and
also has worked extensively with such A-list stars as Elton John,
George Michael, Madonna, and Janet Jackson. Moffett is beloved for his
melodic drumming, based around huge kits. In order to do his musical
magic, he tunes his drums very carefully and with specific goals in mind.
Now you can learn to tune drums like Jonathan Moffett, thanks to a
free instructional video from PreSonus! Although Moffett uses a
PreSonus StudioLive 24.4.2 mixer, this is not a sales piece or product
demo; it’s simply a fascinating lesson in drum tuning from one of the
world’s great drummers, including brief but amazing performances.
Drum Tuning with Jonathan Moffett is a must-watch for every drummer,
drum tech, engineer, and producer. It’s available free on YouTube,
courtesy of PreSonus.

I’d post the video here, but my stupid WordPress is being an (Expletive) and won’t let me but HERE is this link.
UPDATE: This dude is nuts… It basically didn’t sound like music. It sounded like some dude with fancy Jazz hands playing different kicks. I see no music at all… This video is pretty useless… and this guy is a joke… Presonus makes videos like they make equipment… CRAP

12 Gauge Microphones

BEST… MICS…. EVER… Look at this… a Mic in an ACTUAL 12 gauge shell and judging by the Sound Cloud samples, they’ve got the sound to back it. What better way to impress the artists coming in to track by slapping a couple of these on the overheads of drums or on an acoustic guitar. Whatever you do, don’t try to shoot these things. A mic AMPLIFIES things and a 12 Gauge is 170dB so that would sound like the devil farting if you shot one of these.
But seriously, I will be buying some of these and giving a review very soon

The RED12 Microphone is perfect for drum overheads and acoustic instruments such as guitar, mandolin, and violin. The custom assembly achieves the dependable performance you need inside a compact, aesthetically pleasing shell that is as unique as it is bad ass.
These omni microphones are built into an actual spent 12-gauge shotgun shell casing!

Here’s another reason to get 4 or 5 of them. They’re $40 with shipping. To buy this RIGHT NOW, click HERE

Joe Barresi: Tracking Rock

You know what I hate about watching most videos of bands in the studio? Well for one is that they’re usually in the studio I want to record and that the video is more about showing off the songs and the band than it is about the actual recording of the album. I’m sitting there trying to learn new tricks and ol moron number one is trying to be a comedian and moron two is whining and arguing with the producer because they think they know best. Wait, You’re saying Chet Haze is not trying to be a comedian with that rap?? No way… Now that video is just sad.
This video actually lets you see the production side of how Barresi puts his mark on the tracks he lays. Personally, I wouldn’t question Barresi if he used all Behringer and MXL mics because frankly the man is scary looking and has a track record for being a very “opinionated.” Granted he’s a genius and right almost all of the time, but he just is a little rough around the edges at times. Personally those are my favorite people because I was raised by an A-Hole.. LOVE YOU DAD!!!

Techbreakfast and On The Mark Media are proud to announce the
availability of our newest Master Series featuring infamous
producer, recording engineer and mixer, Joe Barresi
Joe has produced, recorded and mixed some of the greatest Rock music of
our time: such as Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, Bad Religion, Kyuss,
Weezer, The Melvins, Parkway Drive, etc.
It is available for purchase here: Joe Barresi: Tracking Rock
Featured in the video is UK recording trio Zico Chain .. a high-energy alternative rock band.
Filmed entirely in High-Definition video over three days of live-tracking,
“Joe Barresi: Tracking Rock” takes you through the entire experience of
watching Joe and the band lay down all the tracks for a song in Joe’s studio.
Joe details his choices of mics, amps, out-board gear and his unique and sonically exquisite soundpath.
In addition, you can see how Joe uses his years of experience to guide how the sounds get put down.
This is a rare chance to peak “behind the scenes” in how a top-tier engineer does his craft.”

The video is $95.00 and if you buy, you even get a chance to email him a question about something he did in the video or just about recording in general. I’d use that to ask him for directions to his studio and any weak points in his security system… to ummm help him… keep more people out… and not at all to use for my benefit to break in and steal gear. That man is an intimidating dude and probably carries a gun.

Disco DSP Discovery

Ok so I’ve got a confession to make. It was actually me who is really REALLY obsessed with the royal wedding so much that I got a tattoo of the royal couple on my teeth I don’t feature enough VST Plug-ins on this site. Mostly because VST doesn’t work with Pro Tools and most of the Plug-ins are only made for Windows and we all know that if everyone had their “druthers,” we would all be using Mac for recording. Alas I realize some of you for different reasons use Windows, so I will try to feature more VST Synths and Plug-Ins.
So this brings me to this program. Disco DSP Discovery. This VST Synth is basically a very intuitive “make-your-own-sounds” Synth. Everything seems to be pretty straight forward too. I personally haven’t used this but the controls look pretty easy to use. Lets see what the company has to say about this program.

32 and 64-bit, 8 oscillators Audio Units and VST Virtual Analog Synthesizer featuring 4 layers, 2X oversampling/undersampling, built-in arpeggiator, sync, FM, 8 filter types, unison edit, panning modulation, stereo delay and gate effects. Imports Nord Lead 2 SysEx data.
The RC3 update includes:

  • 64 bit Audio Units support for Mac.
  • 64 bit VST support for Windows.
  • New selected item EDIT menu background color.
  • Instant refresh in Bank Browser for new FXB files.
  • Better preset renaming dialog box.
  • Manual revision.

This update is free for previous R3 customers. To download Release 3.3 please log at Members Area.

Fantastic. Short and sweet.
